Palos Verdes High prevails over El Segundo at their home break

The South Bay Scholastic Surfing Association made the rounds to 38th Street in El Porto, where a rebounding Palos Verdes High beat El Segundo High last Thursday.

Both teams were hungry for a “w.” A week earlier, South High beat PV in the closest meet of the season so far while El Segundo was dominated by Mira Costa.

Surf was a bit on the strange size with a two to three foot windswell and oily glassy conditions.

“It’s a bit burgery on the outside,” said head judge Chris Wells. “It flattens out until it slams and chucks on the inside shorebreak. It’s a shorepound festival.”

Connecting to the inside was the primary goal for the shortboarders.

“I’m seeing some potential for some fun waves,” said SBBSA league director Dickie O’Reilly. “A couple of good turns and an ending maneuver will score high.”

In heat one of the boy’s shortboard, El Segundo’s Jack Daley placed second with a cover-up head dip. His teammate Chase Woods followed him in third with a good backside rollercoaster. Jukin’ and jivin’ down the line, PV’s Jack Rowan won with an insane left.

“It was all about the flicky flicks,” said judge Mark Cole.

El Segundo’s Shane Frontino followed suit by winning the second heat of the boy’s shortboard with a tailslide slap on a set right.  PV’s Briggs Peus placed second by stomping out a good hit off the lip while his teammate Quinn Stoneman took third. PV’s heat two performance evened up the score 21 to 21.

In the girl’s shortboard, El Segundo’s Dani Montrose placed second by connecting all the way to the inside. PV’s Sophie Traversi took home third with a solid left. Her teammate Alicia Stephan won the heat with a solid drop into a set wave easily one of the biggest in the contest.

The local longboard scene in the South Bay is alive and well. The contest’s longboard heat was a testimony to how rad traditional style longboard has come and the direction it is going with the young surfers. PV’s Jack Rowan has style for miles and won the heat with a critical noseride. His teammate Peter Healey placed second with a radical fin first for the highest score of the division but couldn’t find a back of wave. El Segundo’s Noah Hale took home third with a solid deep noseride.

Bodyboarding thrives on the critical explosion of a breaking lip or in the cradle of an empty tube, few and far between on this day. PV’s team found a way. Rowan raced to grab his boogie after the longboard heat. He belly slid to the inside before el rollo-ing off the lip for third place. Since it was his third heat, he claimed it in stoke. Quinn Stoneman took second with a 360. Healey also on the three heat program, won the division with a 360 and a couple el rollos on a set wave.

The girl’s longboard heat was a bit crunchy as the lady loggers took some gas on the inside. El Segundo’s Dani Montrose took home her second second placing with a solid slide. PV’s Sophie Traversi won by catching a bomb out of the back as her teammate Paula Knickrehm placed third with a soup slide to the inside.

In the third boy’s shortboard division, Zac Montrose, a stable and always fierce competitor, held the fort with a third place finisher. His teammate Lucas Roscoe ended up in second with a slashing top turn. Peter Healey won his second division with a couple figure eight cutbacks and a driving off the lip.

Healey’s partner in crime on the PV team, Rodney Buck, polished out El Segundo for the win. Buck whacked and bashed the inside lip for the heat win while his teammate Sean Ely took third. El Segundo rising star Noah Hall placed second with a couple of slashes.

Final score: PV 97, ES 69
