Montera’s celebrate 70th wedding anniversary

Ralph and Josephine Montera celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary on April 21, 2010. They married in Pueblo, Colorado at Mt Carmel Cathedral in 1940. Ralph talks about how they met at a political rally at the Pueblo City Hall in 1938. He can still remember what she was wearing and how her hair was set.

Hennessey’s Return to the Pier Paddleboard Race: Vela barebacks it, wins


The Annual Hennessey’s Return to the Pier paddleboard race is traditionally a fun, after work race that kicks off the Memorial Day weekend and attracts over 100 paddlers. Not this year. Only 31 paddlers participated in this year in the race from the Hermosa pier to the Manhattan pier and back. Ten- to 20-knot winds, white caps and a swell that had paddlers bobbing in and out of sight of one another and the piers changed the usual character of the race.

Title 2. Chapter 9. Article 7. of the Redondo Beach city charter has a simple title, Harbor Commission (HC). The commission was created by Ordinance No. 2327 adopted on March 15, 1982.
As is the case with all city commissions, the mayor appoints citizens to serve. Membership qualifications are more specific than the commission’s tasks. The municipal code defines 15 specific criteria for serving on the HC, including a number of professional qualifications such as an attorney, a civil engineer and a real estate broker.

Evan Mecham, the late former governor of Arizona, was a divisive force during the 1980s. His term of just over 15 months was cut short by his impeachment. It seems that he loaned his former auto dealership $80,000 in campaign funds. A fellow Mormon, onetime state Senate President Stan Turley, once was quoted as calling him “an ethical pygmy.”

I would like to say thank you to South Bay residents for your generosity and hospitality over this last year and two months since I began my campaign for State Assembly 53rd District. In April 2009, I started with a focus on the local interests of our communities. Here we are so close to Election Day on June 8 and my focus is even sharper now.
