Spotlight: Hermosa Beach Fine Arts Festival

Redondo Beach artist Alison Corteen, whose work is largely beach inspired, is the feature artist at this year’s Hermosa Beach Fine Arts Festival, to be held Saturday and Sunday, June 10, 11, on the Lawn at the Hermosa Beach Community Center. The annual event will feature over 100 juried artists, representing multiple mediums. Student art will also be exhibited, and there will be face painting, and other kids activities. 

Ongoing:  South High class reunion

South High School’s Class of 1993’s 30-year reunion will take place July 15 at R10 Social House on North Harbor Drive in Redondo Beach. There will be food, drinks, music and more. Tickets are $93 per person. Payments can be made via Venmo @SHS93reunion. Information: southhigh1993@gmail.com

Sports luncheon

Former college football game official Charlie McFarrin and Torrance baseball coach Rob Ybarra will be the speakers this week at the South Bay Athletic Club. The SBAC meets Fridays at noon at H.T. Grill, 1701 S. Catalina Ave., Redondo Beach. The luncheon is open to the public; cost is $30.

All-Star Softball Classic 

The 28th South Bay High School Senior All-Star Softball Game, sponsored by the South Bay Athletic Club, will be played at Torrance High at 6:30 p.m. General admission $10, students with school ID $5, infants younger than 5 free. Proceeds help cover costs of the game.

South Bay Paddle

The South Bay Boardriders Club will hold the South Bay Paddle event from 7:30 a.m.-noon, south of the Hermosa Beach Pier. The event serves as a qualification race for the Catalina Classic Paddle Board Race. Information: southbayboardriders.com

George F Canyon Guided Family Nature Preserve Walk 

10:30 a.m. with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. You will be guided by a trained naturalist to discover a unique variety of wildlife in their canyon habitat, which also offers amazing views of the L.A. Basin. Meet on the back deck of the George F Canyon Nature Center. Parking in Preserve lot located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates. No RSVP required. Rain cancels.

Manhattan Beach Photo Op Day

Andy & Renee, Hard Rain

Discover Torrance will kick off its inaugural Torrance Summer Nights series on  with a Woodstock Retrospective by Andy & Renee & Hard Rain. The band takes the stage at 5 p.m. Torrance Summer Nights takes visitors and locals alike on a musical, movie and live theater cultural journey through an array of festival programming. Italy 5K Run LA

Join the Little Italy of Los Angeles Association in filling the streets of San Pedro with green, white and red. Bromeliad meeting

The South Bay Bromeliads’ June 4 speaker is Cristy Brenner, a retired geography professor. As a geographer, Brenner has visited all the continents, but in recent years has concentrated on traveling to regions where bromeliads are located. Brenner will present a slide program featuring her favorite bromeliad photographs. The meeting is at 1:30 p.m. in the Community Room at the Peninsula Center Library, 701 Silver Spur Road, Rolling Hills Estates. In addition to the presentation, there will be refreshments, a members’ Show and Tell and a plant auction.  

Author Larry Ward on Racial Karma
