Homeless Count, Hermosa Beach

Volunteer drivers and counters ages 18 and up will help count persons experiencing homelessness in Hermosa Beach. The City is seeking of 20 volunteers through online signups. Power Against Fraud and Scams

The Redondo Beach Police Department will provide information about fraud prevention, intervention and victim support with Sergeant Scot Martin of the Redondo Beach Police Department. 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Redondo Beach Library 2nd floor meeting room, 303 N. Pacific Coast Hwy., Redondo Beach. 

Power of Choice – via Zoom

Cancer Support Community South Bay free workshop, led by Camela Galano, a master life coach and cancer survivor. The program will explore how conscious choices can help individuals regain a sense of control, purpose, and direction after cancer. 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. Advance registration is required. Hidden Burden of Cancer, In person/Zoom

Cancer Support Community South Bay will host a free lunch and learn community roundtable exploring how insurance delays and denials can interfere with cancer treatment decisions. Patients, caregivers, and health care providers will share perspectives and discuss ways to protect access to prescribed care and treatments. 12:30 – 2 p.m. Lunch (in person): 12:30 – 1 p.m., Community roundtable (in person and online): 1 – 2 p.m. 2601 Airport Drive, Suite 100, Torrance. Sports Luncheon, H.T. Grill

The South Bay Athletic Club luncheon with Reggie Morris, coach of Redondo Union High School’s boys basketball team. The Seahawks are ranked 4th in the CIF-Southern Section.

Chamber Music Concert

The South Bay Chamber Music Society concert features a performance by the Debussy Trio. 8 p.m. Recital Hall of the music department at the north end of the campus, LA Harbor College, 1111 Figueroa Place, Wilmington. The concert will repeat on Sunday, January 25, 3 p.m., Pacific Unitarian Church, 5621 Montemalaga Dr., Rancho Palos Verdes. The concerts are free for everyone. Champions for Cures and Care Gala

South Bay Boardriders Club president Tom Horton, of Hermosa Beach, will be honored by the ALS Network with the 2026 Essey Commitment to Cures Award at its annual Champions for Cures and Care Gala. The award recognizes Horton’s extraordinary contributions to advancing ALS research and advocacy as a dedicated member of the ALS Network’s Community Research Committee (CRC). The Gala starts at 6:30 p.m. with wine tasting, cocktails and silent auction. Pasadena Convention Center Ballroom: 300 E Green St., Pasadena. Individual tickets can be purchased at ALSChampions.org.

Wildwood Miles, Mira Costa

The 1st annual Wildwood Miles for Girls + Women. An empowering event focused on bringing girls and women together, under the lights for an awesome night of racing, no matter your level. Romantic Classics, Beach Cities Symphony

In the first concert of the season, recognized worldwide as a musical phenomenon, Grammy-nominated Andrés Cárdenes will perform the Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1, and Beach Cities Symphony will perform works from Beethoven and Mendelssohn. Light Gate Sunset, Manhattan Beach

The Light Gate sculpture, installed in 2015, has a keyhole-shaped opening in the center of the sculpture that focuses an alignment and view from the Manhattan Beach City Hall toward ocean sunsets, optimally between the dates November 14 & January 27. The sculpture was commissioned as the City’s official Centennial Public Art piece. 5:15 – 5:30 p.m. Top of 14th Street and Highland Ave., Manhattan Beach.

Taizé Service of Healing and Wholeness

Taizé is a calming and beautiful form of sung contemplative prayer developed in an ecumenical monastery in France. Candlelight, periods of silence, chants and intercessory prayer with a Prayer team leader. Monthly every fourth Tuesday. 7 p.m. St. Francis Episcopal Church, 2200 Via Rosa, Palos Verdes Estates. After Hours: We Got Power!

Thursday, January 29. Celebrate Hermosa Beach’s hardcore punk rock of the ’80s with a panel of punk luminaries. Authors David Markey and Jordan Schwartz’s We Got Power! Hardcore Punk Scenes from 1980s Southern California, published by Bazillion Points in 2012, documents the early Los Angeles hardcore punk scene through photos, essays, reprints of their influential “We Got Power!” Fanzine, and writings and photos of South Bay Punk Bands. David Markey and Jordan Schwartz will be joined by punk icons Dez Cadena and Janet Housden, who contributed to the book, for what is sure to be an unforgettable discussion moderated by Kevin Salk. 6 – 8 p.m. Hermosa Beach Museum, 710 Pier Ave. Tickets: hermosabeachhistoricalsociety.org/events.

The 5th Annual El Porto Surf Contest
