By the conclusion of the filing period last Friday, six residents—including Mayor Wayne Powell—filed their papers to contend for the three open seats next term on Manhattan Beach City Council.

The March 5 election will replace council members Richard Montgomery and Nick Tell, whose terms will expire. Council members Amy Howorth and David Lesser will retain their seats next term as mayor pro tem and mayor, respectively.

Powell, whose nine-month term as mayor expires in March, is up for re-election. His nomination papers were filed on Nov. 28 and his candidacy was confirmed by the county on Dec. 4.

Entrepreneur Tony D’Errico, television broadcast executive Mark Lipps, former mayor and two-term council member Mitch Ward, retired municipal counsel Mark Burton and longtime resident and activist Viet Ngo are in the running for a council seat.

Two residents—Martha Andreani and Kathleen Paralusz—initially pulled their papers in November but did not file them in time, voiding their candidacy.

The seat for city treasurer is uncontested. By Friday’s deadline, incumbent Tim Lilligren was the only person to file his papers for the seat. His candidacy has been confirmed by the county.
