The night before Thanksgiving, Ego Fine Art Gallery in Redondo Beach will pay homage to the Beach Cities of decades past.

Dozens of local artists will exhibit work reflective of a slower-paced way of life, a simpler time before property values skyrocketed and nightclubs proliferated in the Beach Cities of the South Bay. Their collective exhibit will be part of the first annual Hey Turkey Day, an event so-named because of its proximity to Thanksgiving and as a nod to Turkey John, a symbol of Hermosa Beach culture if ever there was one.

Organized by M1SK – Made 1n Southern Kalifornia, a local design and clothing company – the event will feature refreshments, live DJ sets, and work created by artists like Max Becker, Max Hanson, Mirko Antich, Maggie Lochtenberg, Sam Harang, Andrea Revenant, Chris Bowman, Tyler S. Williams, Nickolai Preiss, Johnny 2/3, Harrison Cantelmo, Vulture Vintage, Anthony Hernandez, Alby There, Marcus Poydras, and Matt Borgia.

Their art will reflect the nostalgia of a “simpler time,” explained event organizer Daniel Inez.

“You hear people complaining, whether it’s valid or invalid, that Hermosa is different today,” he said. “Property values are high and people that grew up can’t afford to live here. It’s overrun with bars, it’s a different vibe. It’s not the slow-paced Hermosa we grew up with.”

Ego Fine Art Gallery opened just this year on N. Francisca in the space vacated by Cannery Row, which for years was a bastion of South Bay creative culture.

“It’s the perfect place, because that building has a lot of history,” Inez said. “Pennywise used to practice there and Fletcher [Dragge of Pennywise] used to live there, so it’s a perfect spot.”

The gallery will host Hey Turkey Day on Wednesday, Nov. 27 from 6 to 10 p.m. When it closes, attendees can cross the street to an after-party at VFW Post replete with live music from local bands like Descendents cover band The Rescendents.
