Beach Cities Sports: Baseball, running, volleyball and more

Beach Volleyball:ย Mira Costa will be hosting its 2nd Annual High School Girls Beach Volleyball Pairs Tournament on Sunday, Feb. 28 at the Rosecrans Avenue courts in Manhattan Beach. Check-in is a 8:30 a.m. Entry fee is $40/team with a minimum of three games plus playoffs. To register, visit miracostabeach.com.

 

The Co-ed Volleyball on the Beach Leagues kick off the season on Tuesday nightsย starting Mar. 22 on the north side of the Hermosa Beach Pier.Four-person teams (two guys, two girls) play matches that run from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in a best 2 out of 3 format. Two weeks of playoffs follow the six-week season. There is a cap of 44 teams and individuals must contact Prank Monkey to be placed on a team for registration. Baseball: Mira Costa will be holding its Ski Week Baseball Camp is for 5-13 year olds, Monday through Friday, Feb. 15-19 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Three and four-day partial camp participation is available as are sibling discounts. Junior high campers will be separated and introduced to a high school practice. Entry fee for the week is $250. Redondo Union High School begins its second century of baseball featuring its annual Alumni Game on Saturday, Feb. 27. The event begins with batting practice at 9:45 a.m. followed by the game at 11 a.m. For more information, contact head coach Jeff Baumback, Jbaumback@rbusd.org or 562-256-6527.

Running: American Martyrs School will be holding its 36th annual 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 8 a.m. The fast, yet challenging course starts and finishes at the school located at 624 15th St., Manhattan Beach. The event includes a costume contest and running stroller category. Awards of $100 in gift certificates are given to the top overall male and female finishers and additional medals are awarded. Matthew Miller, of Manhattan Beach, is the defending champion posting a time of 16 minutes, 29 seconds in 2015. A continental breakfast is be served following the race. Registration is open for the 13th Annual Village Runner St. Patrickโ€™s Day 5K Run and Community Walk to be held at 8 a.m. Sunday, Mar. 13 in Redondo Beachโ€™s Riviera Village. Following the 5K at 9:30 a.m., the next generation of runners will compete in the kidโ€™s Chase Stecyk Leprechaun Dash for Gold. All participants receive a T-shirt and cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers. The event begins with a two-day Health and Fitness Expo on Saturday, Mar. 12. Football: The Prank Monkey Coed Flag Football on the Beach League begins Sunday, Feb. 21 at 10th Street and The Strand in Hermosa Beach. Four-on-four games consist of two 20-minute halves, alternating male and female quarterbacks. Female touchdowns worth double points. Registration offered as a team only at the Community Center, 710 Pier Ave. in Hermosa Beach Entry fee is $265 per team with a 10-person roster limit. For more information, visit prankmonkey.org.
Fundraising: The Redondo Union Baseball program is holding a fundraiser sponsored by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. This fundraiser will raise $3,500 for the Redondo Union Baseball program and the varsity team will get to play a game at Angel Stadium on March 19. The program must sell 700 ticket vouchers to a regular season Angels game. The vouchers are $20 each and can be exchanged for one game ticket.
