Sidewalk poetry

The Friends of Redondo Beach Arts and the Redondo Beach United School District have joined forces to identify promising poet laureates through a writing contest that was open to all schools. School committees oversaw the competition and announced their own winners. The selected poems were then submitted to the Friends of Redondo Beach Arts for inclusion in their Sidewalk Poetry project, which aims to stamp student poems in concrete in district schools over the summer as new cement is poured.

“Our art and cultural support group is focused on encouraging public art and making it an integral, vital part of our community,” said Janet Johnson, President of Friends of Redondo Beach Arts. “We certainly want to get young people involved and to inspire them in the arts.”

Winners of the Sidewalk Poetry Contest include Devon Williams, RUHS; Haley Hyatt, Parras; Caterina Hyneman, Beryl; Alena Smith, Madison; Briana Henderson, Washington; Quinn Robinson, Tulita; Alexander Kowal, Alta Vista; Matthew O’Connell, Adams; Madison Kennel, Jefferson and Josie Qi, Lincoln.

A formal unveiling will take place in the coming weeks. For more info, visit www.FriendsRedondoBeachArts.org.
