About Town: Manhattan Beach, Dec. 1

Sand Dune Park meeting

Have input about the future of Sand Dune Park? Join the Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Department for a community meeting to discuss whether or not to replace the fence at the bottom of the dune and whether or not to add extra time slots on Sunday and early in the morning on weekdays. Dec. 7, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the police and fire community meeting room at 400 15th St.

Greeting card workshop

Ring into the holiday season by making handmade greeting cards and small artsy gifts for family and friends. Dec. 7 and Dec. 10, 6 – 9 p.m. and 10 – 1 p.m., respectively. The class will be held at the Creative Arts Center at 1560 Manhattan Beach Blvd. $45 for residents, $49.50 for non-residents. Material included.

An educated city

Manhattan Beach ranks as the fifth most educated city in California, according to recently released Census data. Nearly 73 percent of Manhattan Beach residents have earned a bachelors degree or more, according to the California Department of Finance’s Demographic Research Unit. Palo Alto is number one on the list, at 79.7 percent. The analysis is based on data for residents age 25 and older and on populations larger than 20,000 people.

Meter bagging

The city will be bagging the parking meters in downtown Manhattan Beach from Dec. 12 through Christmas. The time limit of the spots will remain the same – whether the parking spot sign says two hours or 24 minutes – to maintain turnaround among shop-goers. “I look at this as simply a tax break for our residents,” said Mayor Nick Tell, at the Oct. 4 City Council meeting, where the council voted unanimously to bag the meters during the holidays.
