Fire Station Construction
Scaffolding on the city’s fire station should be up Jan. 4, said Public Works Director Andrew Brozyna. Plans call for the eventual demolition of the station tower.
The construction comes as the city seeks to modernize facilities for its police and fire departments. Trailers in the city hall parking lot are currently housing some staff, while the city’s jail and detective detail will remain open during construction.
Public safety services will not be affected by construction, Brozyna said.
The construction on the fire tower will force the relocation of Hermosa’s noon siren, Brozyna said. The siren may be inoperable for several days, and will be relocated a block to the east, to the top of the city’s Community Center.
Although plans were not yet finalized, Brozyna said that the siren may remain at the Community Center after construction on the fire station is completed. Such a change, he said, is unlikely to change the reach of the daily reminder.
“It should have the same range as it does right now,” Brozyna said. “Although from our perspective at CIty Hall, it’s not going to be right in our face any more.”
New Year’s Eve
Hermosa will host its annual New Year’s Eve extravaganza on the pier next Thursday night.
The celebration, hosted by the Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Bureau, will begin at 8 p.m. Dec. 31st at Pier Plaza.
Revelers will have a chance to ring in the New Year twice: once at midnight proper, and three hours prior at 9 p.m. to coincide with the ball drop at Times Square in New York City.
Big-band swing music for the evening will be provided by Lou Giovannetti and an 18-piece orchestra.
