About town in Hermosa Beach

Pop-up art gallery

A art gallery will be temporarily opening on Pier Plaza tonight, filling a site once occupied by a coffee shop.

Dane Capo, a Hermosa Beach native, will be displaying his paintings at the former Scapegoat, a boutique coffee house that folded late last year. Opening night for the gallery is tonight from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The space at 27 Pier Ave has been unoccupied since Scapegoat closed. Capo’s art will fill the walls until the owner is able to find a permanent tenant.

Capo, who was diagnosed with epilepsy and autism as a child, has previously displayed his art at Gus Vintage Goods in Redondo Beach, pages: a bookstore in Manhattan Beach, the El Segundo Art Walk, and at Curious in Hermosa.

Prints and reproductions will be available for purchase at the gallery.

Deadline to register to vote

The deadline to register to vote for the upcoming special election is Feb. 15.

To register, go to the Los Angeles County Registrar of Voter’s website www.lavote.net.

The election, which will fill a vacancy on the City Council, will be an all-mail election. Ballots sent to residents can be returned by mail or brought to the City Clerk’s office at City Hall.

Downtown analysis meeting

The city will host a meeting tonight for the community to provide input about a study of the costs of providing municipal services to the city’s downtown, and the revenues businesses there generate.

The meeting, beginning at 7 p.m. at City Council Chambers, will include a presentation of a cost-benefit analysis prepared by Kosmont, a consulting firm hired by the city. Those unable to attend may view the report on the city’s website.

St. Patrick’s Day approaching

The Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Bureau is accepting applications for organizations looking to participate in this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

The parade will take place Saturday March 12, or March 19 if there is rain the previous week. Applications for floats are available on the Chamber’s website, and are due by Feb. 19.

This year will mark the 22nd anniversary of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which begins at City Hall and heads down Pier Ave. before finishing at the intersection of Hermosa Ave. and 10th St. The parade typically features bagpipers, horses and Irish setters, and is expected to draw about 15,000 observers.
