About town in Hermosa Beach

Community garden

The sign-up process for for a plot in the forthcoming community garden at South Park begins Thursday morning.

South Park, which reopened earlier this year after a multi-year redesign, features a community garden in the place of a former roller rink. Residents can obtain plots in the garden for growing their own produce.

Sign-ups begin at the park on Valley Drive at 9 a.m., and will go until 6 p.m. The ribbon cutting and official opening of the garden will take place Saturday at 3 p.m.

Swearing in

Stacey Armato will be sworn in as the fifth member of the Hermosa Beach City Council Thursday evening.

The newly elected councilmember prevailed over challenger Trent Larson in a March 1 special election. Armato’s selection gives the council a full five-person roster for the first time since Sept. 2015, when former councilmember Nanette Barragan resigned to run for Congress.

The installation ceremony begins at 6 p.m. in City Council chambers.

Hearts of Hermosa

The Hermosa Beach Education Foundation will host its annual Hearts of Hermosa party, a fundraiser to benefit city schools, this Saturday evening.

The event will take place at the Hermosa Community Center, with doors opening at 6 p.m., and will feature a silent auction, dinner and dancing.

Tickets may be purchased through the education foundation’s website.
