Earth Hour 2013
For the sixth consecutive year, City Hall and the Manhattan Beach pier will go dark during Earth Hour—this year’s is on Saturday from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.—to show the city’s support for the global event that seeks to raise awareness about energy conservation.
For the first time, the city will add Polliwog Park to the list to make a greater visual impact. Last year, residents, businesses and government agencies in 6,950 cities and towns across 152 countries participated in the movement of jointly turning off all non-essential lights for one hour.
Leadership MB Class of 2014 Info Session
An informational session for Leadership Manhattan Beach Class of 2014 will be held Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. in the City Council Chambers. Leadership Manhattan Beach, a leadership training program for professionals, students and others, celebrated its 20th birthday last year, graduating more than 500 community members since its first class in 1992. During the nine-month program, the class develops leadership skills and undertakes a project to benefit the community. Tsunami Preparedness Town Hall
The city is hosting a Tsunami Preparedness Town Hall meeting next Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Joslyn Center. The forum will focus on the proposed changes to the Tsunami Inundation Area map that guides the city’s emergency response to issue a Tsunami warning. Experts from the California Geological Survey and the California Emergency Management Agency will provide a presentation regarding revised elevation standards and will be available to answer questions. National Tsunami Preparedness Week runs from Sunday to Thursday.
