About Town Redondo: Christmas tree recycling, RUHS Chinese New Year, City council candidate’s call
Christmas tree recycling offered through this week
Athens Services continues to pick up Christmas trees to recycle through the second week of January in Redondo Beach, on regular garbage/recycling pick- up days.
The collected trees are processed and used as mulch or cover material at landfills, or taken to an Athens compost facility in Victorville.
To participate in the program, place your tree next to your regular garbage containers. Trees over six feet need to be cut in half.
RUHS Chinese Honor Society to put on Chinese New Year celebration
The National Chinese Honor Society at Redondo Union High School will hold a Chinese New Year Celebration Jan. 29-31 at RUHS.
Billed as a “vibrant and immersive showcase of Chinese culture,” the event includes a “Lion Dance Performance” Jan. 29 at the Quad at the high school, interactive cultural activities such as hands-on learning experiences and traditional crafts and games.
“Beyond being a festive occasion, this celebration provides an opportunity to emphasize the importance of diversity, inclusivity and cultural awareness,” said Cathy Yang, advisor for RUHS National Chinese Honor Society. “By sharing this experience, we aim to strengthen community bonds and leave a lasting impact on all participants.”
City council candidate calls for stay on retail cannabis stores
District 1 city council candidate Brad Waller has called for a “pause” on the city’s pursuit to open two retail cannabis stores.
Speaking during public input on non-agenda items at Tuesday night’s city council meeting, Waller cited reasons of financial insecurity of the cannabis industry, an L.A. Times story alleging pesticide contamination in legal cannabis products, and the coming March city election in Redondo Beach which could turn over as many as three council seats and the mayor’s.
Waller is a former eight-year Redondo Unified school boardmember, and member of various city committees. ER
