BCHD distributes Naloxone, trains school administrators and students
Representatives of Beach Cities Health District (BCHD) went to Redondo Union High School May 20-21 to speak to 786 juniors and seniors about fentanyl and how to administer Naloxone, the medication which can reverse a fentanyl overdose.
BCHD earlier gave training to 565 teachers, administrators and staff at school district offices, and on site at 13 South Bay schools.
BCHD has distributed naloxone to area middle schools and high school staff and administrators as part of the California Department of Health Care Services’ Naloxone Distribution Project. For more information, go to bchd.org/opioids.
Four Redondo Beach firefighters honored
Four Redondo Beach Fire Department firefighter/paramedics were saluted May 23 at the annual South Bay Medal of Valor awards luncheon in Torrance for saving the life of a 15-year-old boy, who went into cardiac arrest while playing soccer.
RBFD responders were Joseph Boehm, Timothy Dennis, Ryan Shoda and Garrett Todd.
According to the Redondo Beach Fire Department, on the morning of Sept. 17, 2022, a boy collapsed on the field at Adams Middle School, after which Boehm, Dennis, Shoda and Todd arrived, taking over for bystanders performing CPR.
The firefighter/paramedics placed the boy on a cardiac monitor and found his heart in a non-viable rhythm and defibrillated.
Taken by ambulance to the hospital, the patient remained unconscious as paramedics further worked to help him breathe independently.
The boy regained consciousness at the hospital and made a full recovery.
CORRECTION:
In the May 23 article, “$250 school board stipend clashes with city charter,” the nature of the appointment of RBUSD school board member Rolf Strutzenberg was mischaracterized. He was appointed by the city council, not the school board, to serve on the city’s charter review committee. ER
