About Town Redondo: New harbor master, General Plan Update environmental report

Designated harbor master part of 4-year RBFD deal

As part of a new, four-year labor agreement with the Redondo Beach Fire Department, a new Harbor Master will be assigned as a “single-point person” at the King Harbor Marina station for a one-year trial.

Captain Curt Mahoney will report to Interim Fire Chief Patrick Butler, who, aside from chief duties, has acted as harbor master for the past two years.

Recent budget cuts have reduced the fire crew at the Marina station from 12 members to six.

Mahoney’s position will be a “desk job,” as Butler described it, to act as the main point of contact at the harbor, to inform the chief and other city leaders about matters at the harbor.

Girls club soccer teams win national tournaments

Three South Bay girls youth club soccer teams won a national tournament July 10-13 in Richmond, Virginia, put on by the Elite Clubs National League, formed in 2009.

The age 17, 15 and 14 teams each won west regional qualifier tournaments to advance to Richmond, among eight total teams.

Players in the two upper divisions include girls from South Bay high schools (whose teams they play on in the winter), and Los Angeles and Walnut.

City General Plan update draft EIR open for public comment

A Draft Environmental Impact Report was released Aug. 1 for the city’s pending General Plan Update. The public comment period is open Aug. 1–Sept. 16.

Written feedback may be sent to generalplanEIR@redondo.org

The Update focuses on land use, housing, infrastructure, mobility, conservation, recreation and parks, open space and environmental hazards/natural hazards.

The draft was created by a 27-member, city-appointed General Plan Advisory Committee (GPAC), which has submitted its recommendations to the planning commission, which will advise the city council on a final draft to go before voters.

The plan was last updated in 1992. ER
