Northrop Grumman adds pairing for autonomous military work
Northrop Grumman at Redondo Beach announced April 3 a collaboration with the EpiSci company, using its software to help speed delivery of autonomous aeronautic military devices for the U.S. and its allies.
“Collaboration is one way to rapidly bring new capabilities to the warfighter while building upon Northrop Grumman’s decades of autonomy experience to create distinct advantages over adversarial threats,” said Tom Pieronek in a statement, Northrop Grumman chief technology officer and vice president, research and technology, Aeronautics Systems.
The companies’ pairing aims to allow uncrewed aircraft to make adjustments during a mission, giving flexibility to military commanders in changing environments.
“We look forward to working with Northrop Grumman,” said Dr. Dan Javorsek, chief technology officer, EpiSci (Poway, Calif.) “Integrating our software into their hardware and control systems, we can better deliver trusted autonomous solutions that are critical for our warfighter’s mission success.”
Last October, EpiSci was awarded a U.S. Navy contract to develop autonomous algorithms to covertly find, fix and track targets as part of the Navy’s Information Warfare Research Project.
Underwater Easter egg hunt skips year
The annual Dive N’ Surf Dive Team underwater Easter egg hunt was not held this year, in favor of a dive off of Terranea – which was canceled due to forecasted weather for Easter weekend.
Brook Adams-Grenier, dive team leader, made the decision March 28.
“When it comes to weather, we like to play it safe,” she said.
The forecast brought concerns of visibility in the water and swelling current.
The group’s mostly annual Easter Egg hunt consists of a staff diver placing hard-boiled eggs in water up to 60 feet deep for divers to find. Participants range from open-water rated to dive master.
The event is one of Dive N’ Surf’s Sunday monthly dives, which includes underwater Christmas tree decorating in December and underwater-pumpkin carving for Halloween.
