Barragan Resigns

Nanette Barragan resigned from her post on the Hermosa Beach City Council last Wednesday.

The first-term councilwoman had initially planned to step down on July 31. But Barragan said she later chose to extend her stay through the end of August in order to ensure passage of the city’s plastic bag ban.

The ban passed unanimously at the August 25 City Council meeting.

Barragan, who served as Hermosa’s first Latina mayor, said she is resigning her post in order to focus on her race for the 44th Congressional District, which includes Compton, the San Pedro area of Los Angeles, and Carson, Barragan’s hometown.

“My time serving this community has been invaluable, and I will take it with me as I step down to run for Congress,” Barragan said in a statement.

The city council will discuss filling the seat Barragan leaves behind at its Sept. 24 meeting.

Concert and Fireworks

A charter bus will take concertgoers from Hermosa Beach to Hollywood for a night of eighties music and fireworks at the Hollywood Bowl on Friday.

The Psychedelic Furs and the B-52s will perform, with fireworks to follow. Buses will leave from the Hermosa Beach Community Center at 710 Pier Avenue starting at 5 p.m. and will return to Hermosa after the concert and fireworks, with an expected time of 11:45 p.m.
Tickets are $55, $50 for Hermosa Beach residents. Reservations are required, and can be made on the City of Hermosa Beach’s web site. ER
