Athletes battle on the diamond, court and track

In a one-match playoff for the final automatic post-season berth from the Bay League, Mira Costa’s boys tennis team defeated Redondo 12-6 Tuesday. The Mustangs had defeated the Sea Hawks 13-5 last week to create a third-place between the two rivals.

Bay League champion Palos Verdes is ranked No. 2 in Division 1 while Bay runner-up Peninsula holds the seventh spot. Playoff pairings will be announced Monday, May 9.

Mira Costa (12-10, 4-5) was led by the sweeps of doubles teams of Ben Sands-Michael Carella and Matt Wah-Brian Brothers who each won three sets.

In singles action, Tony Cvitanic, Kyvan Elap and Will Wong won two sets.

Redondo (12-9, 3-6) was led by its ace sophomore Derek Levchenko who won all three of his sets. The Sea Hawks expect to earn a wild-card bid.

Track and Field

Mira Costa hosts the Bay League finals Friday at 5 p.m. Qualifiers advance to the CIF Divisional Prelims to be held Saturday, May 14 followed by the CIF Championship Finals on Saturday, May21 at Cerritos College.

The Masters Meet will be held at Cerritos College on Friday, May 27. The State Meet is slated for June 3-4 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis.

Baseball

In a critical Bay League contest, Redondo (12-15, 3-4) will be looking for a series split when it hosts Mira Costa Friday at 3:15 p.m. in the second meeting between the rivals.

Mira Costa (16-12, 3-4) defeated Redondo Wednesday behind pitcher Sean Isaac’s 4-0 complete-game shutout. Bryan Afzali knocked in two runs while going 3-for-3 and sophomore David Odle went 2-for-3 for the Mustangs.

Mira Costa will play Palos Verdes in a home-and-away series next Tuesday and Thursday in the final week of Bay League action.

Redondo concludes its league season with an away-and-home series with Peninsula next Tuesday and Thursday.

Peninsula and West entered the week tied for first place with 5-1 league records. Peninsula throttled Leuzinger 20-2 Wednesday while West was beating Palos Verdes 8-6.

Softball

It’s was a wild Wednesday in the Bay League with first-place Peninsula allowing four runs in the bottom of the seventh in a shocking 5-4 loss at West.

While Mira Costa was enjoying a scoring carousel in a 21-1 victory at Leuzinger, Redondo lost to Palos Verdes 9-6 creating a three-way tie for first place with Peninsula (8-13, 5-2), Mira Costa (17-5-1, 5-2) and Palos Verdes (13-11, 5-2).

Taylor Glover led the Mira Costa hit parade going 4-for-4 including two home runs, four RBIs and four runs scored. Chloe Krasnoff was a single shy of hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-3 with a double, triple, home run and six RBIs. Katie Saunders went 4-for-4 including a home run and four RBIs.

The Mustangs travel to West (8-12, 2-5) Friday for a 3:15 p.m. contest. Mira Costa will host Redondo Tuesday at Marine Park in a critical Bay League showdown at 7 p.m. before traveling to Palos Verdes for its league finale on Thursday, May 12.

The Mustangs and Sea Hawks entered the week in a three-way tie for second place with Palos Verdes with 4-2 records. Peninsula began the week at 5-1.

Redondo surrendered 16 hits in the loss to Palos Verdes Wednesday, managing only five of its own. Brett Aspel hit a three-run home run to give Redondo a 3-2 lead in the second inning and Jennifer Stevens added a solo in the final frame.

The Sea Hawks (12-10, 4-3) look to get back on track when they play at Leuzinger Friday at 3:15 p.m. After the showdown with Mira Costa on Tuesday, Redondo concludes its regular season hosting Peninsula Thursday, May 12. ER
