Bay Watch Community Calendar 4-7-22

Spotlight: The Roundhouse Aquarium will host author Gae Polisner on April 10, 10-11:30 a.m. Polisner will read an excerpt from her new children’s book, “Consider the Octopus,” then lead young readers in a creative writing activity about the oceans and environment. Afterwards, attendees can meet Gae and get their books signed. All attendees will receive a bookmark, a Roundhouse octopus sticker and will be entered in a raffle for Roundhouse merchandise. The event is geared toward children ages 8-14.  Two ticket options are available. Admission to the event, plus a signed, hardcover copy of “Consider the Octopus,” is $35. End-of-Life Options in California

Cancer Support Community South Bay (CSC South Bay) — formerly Cancer Support Community Redondo Beach — is offering this free workshop led by nurse Karen Morin. Morin will present the various end-of-life options and addendums available to Californians and how to access them. Participants will learn how to have autonomy throughout care and how to open dialogues with families and their health care teams about their wishes and desires for end-of-life care and treatment.  The workshop is from noon-1:30 p.m. on Zoom. “Matilda the Musical”

The Palos Verdes High School Drama Department will present seven performances of Matilda the Musical”. Showtimes are April 8-9 and April 15-16 at 7 p.m., April 10 and April 16 at 2 p.m. and April 14 at 4 p.m. in the multipurpose room at Palos Verdes High School, 600 Cloyden Road, Palos Verdes Estates. Following each matinee performance, audience members are invited to a meet and greet with the cast in the theater courtyard. It’s only magic

The Poof Too magic show returns for a 30th year at 7 p.m. at the Hermosa Beach Community Theater, 710 Pier Ave. Among the performers will be Master of Manipulation Christopher Hart, magician Sirinda Sincharoen, cabaret performer Ron Saylor, balloon artist Dennis Forel, comedy magician Greg Otto and illusionists Victor & Diamond. Surfers Walk of Fame

In Hermosa Beach, April 22-23 is all about the Surfers Walk of Fame. The Kick-Off Party will take place on April 22 at the Hermosa Beach Community Theatre, 710 Pier Ave. Doors open at 5 p.m. Past and present inductees will be on hand. The event also includes a surf film by Brad Jacobson and the South Bay Surf Awards. This year’s honorees are Nick Christensen (Cultural Legend), Josette Lagardere (Champion), Charlie Quesnel (South Bay Legend) and John Teague (Pioneer). They will be inducted on April 23 on Pier Plaza at 11 a.m. The Spyder Surf Fest will follow the induction ceremony at 1 p.m. on Pier Plaza with live music, raffles and giveaways. “Beauty and the Beast”

After a three-year absence from live musical theater, the Mira Costa High School Drama/Tech Department is returning to the stage with the musical, “Beauty and the Beast.” The show is for all ages. The South Coast Cactus & Succulent Society’s annual Show & Sale is set for April 23-24, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., at the Palos Verdes Art Center, 5504 Crestridge Road, Rancho Palos Verdes. Class reunion

Succulents presentation

At the invitation of the Peninsula Garden Club and the Palos Verdes Art Center, Debra Baldwin will present a program, “Transforming Your Garden Into a Gallery of Gorgeous Succulents,” on May 1. Baldwin launched worldwide interest in succulents with her first book, “Designing with Succulents,” and has since written several other books on these plants.
