Dylan Hannon will present “Othonas for the Collector” at the South Coast Cactus & Succulent Society’s January meeting. Spotlight: John Van Hamersveld, designer of the iconic “Endless Summer” movie poster, as well as Rolling Stones and Beatles album covers, will be the Happy Hour with History speaker at the Hermosa Beach Historical Museum on Thursday, January 26. The Palos Verdes native also designed the “History of Surfing” mural on the side of The Underground Pub & Grill at 14th Street and Hermosa Avenue. $5. Chamber concert

Prize-winning pianist Claire Huangci will join the Chamber Orchestra of the South Bay for a concert on Jan. 15 at Armstrong Theatre, 3330 Civic Center Drive, Torrance. Parking is free. There will be a concert preview at 6:15 p.m., followed by the concert at 7 p.m. Tickets are $63 and can be purchased in person by calling (310) 781-7171 and at arts.torranceca.gov. 

MLK Jr. Day of Service and March

Community members are invited to participate in a Day of Service and March in honor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. on Jan. 16. The program is presented by the Redondo Beach Police Department’s Community Engagement Board. The march begins at 10 a.m. at 101 W. Torrance Blvd., Redondo Beach (the Police Pier Sub-Station) and will conclude at the RBPD Main Police Station. The following donations can be made at the march or prior at the RBPD: a gallon Ziplock bag containing one mini shampoo and conditioner, one mini deodorant, toothbrush and toothpaste, a brush or comb, one mini body wash, one mini bottle of lotion, one package of wet wipes and one pair of adult or children’s socks. The bags will be donated to the RBPD’s domestic violence program.

MLK Jr. Day of Service

Join the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy on Jan. 16, 9 a.m.-noon, at the White Point Nature Preserve. Participants will help care for the White Point Native Plant Demonstration Garden by removing invasive weeds. Sign up at https://pvplc.volunteerhub.com/.

Live theater

Twelve women will share their (mostly) true stories on stage for a live audience in “un-told,” a storytelling show that will run two nights at The Grand Annex, 434 W. 6th St. in San Pedro. History program

Learn what life was like in Redondo Beach during WWI and the influenza epidemic of 1918-19 on Jan. 21 at the Main Library, 303 N. Pacific Coast Highway. Redondo Beach reference librarians Ed Martinez and Douglas Thompson will lead the program, which will be held from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the 2nd floor meeting room.

Guided nature hike

Enjoy a free guided tour of Abalone Cove in Rancho Palos Verdes at 2 p.m. on Jan. 22. Los Serenos docents will lead the hike. Participants will walk past unique flora and fauna and explore tide pools teeming with marine life. Moderate to strenuous. This is a kid-friendly hike but the trails and rocky beach are unsuitable for baby strollers. No dogs allowed on the beach. Rain cancels. Parking at Abalone Cove is extremely limited; carpooling is highly recommended. For more information, go to losserenos.org. 

Memorial game

The annual Brett Mendoza Peninsula Alumni baseball game will be held on Jan. 28 at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School, 27118 Silver Spur Road, Rolling Hills Estates. Pre-game activities begin at 10 a.m. Game time is noon. The game honors Brett Mendoza, a former Peninsula and Loyola Marymount University catcher who died in a car accident in 2018. 

Educators to be honored

Palos Verdes Peninsula Rotary is preparing to honor nine outstanding educators from public and private schools on the Peninsula. Now in its 42nd year, “Educator of the Year” will take place  on Feb. 9 at Palos Verdes Golf Club. There will be a pre-event reception at 5:45 p.m., followed by dinner and the program.
