Spotlight: Hermosa for the Holidays

Hermosa Beach celebrates the approaching holidays with its annual Pier Plaza tree lighting ceremony on Sunday, November 10 at 6:30 p.m. The downtown Hermosa celebration begins Saturday at 10 a.m. with a Santa’s workshop and storytime tent on Manhattan Avenue in front of Marlin Equity, followed at noon by the Mira Costa Choir performing in front of Java Man, and carnival rides on Pier Plaza. Snow flurries at the beach

The Point in El Segundo is trading in sandcastles for snowmen as they invite guests to enjoy snow showers every Friday and Saturday from Nov. 25 through Dec. 23, and then every night from Dec. 19 through Dec. 23. Snow flurries will take place on the grass at The Point and will happen every 30 minutes from 6-8 p.m. Information: thepointsb.com

Manhattan Beach art exhibit

The Manhattan Beach Art Center has a new exhibit, Lynn Aldrich’s “Fly High Fly Deep.” The exhibit, on display through Jan. 1, is about environmental conservation. Viewers are invited to consider the wonder and fragility of life in the sky and sea. The center’s gallery is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. For more information, call 310-802-5440.

Torrance art exhibits

The Torrance Art Museum has debuted its fall exhibitions. It continues through December. The exhibits are “Un-Civil War! (An Election Special),” a critical inquiry into the deepening divisions in America’s political and cultural landscape, and “Ken Friedman: 92 Events.” 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays. Sports luncheon

The South Bay Athletic Club meets every Friday at noon at H.T. Grill, 1701 S. Catalina Ave., Redondo Beach. This week’s program will focus on the USC-UCLA football game with former UCLA defensive back Danny Graham, a multi-sport star at Bishop Montgomery High, as the featured speaker. The luncheon is open to the public. Lunch is $30.

Friends of the Hermosa Beach Library book sale

The Hermosa Beach Friends of the Library Bookstore will hold its monthly Saturday sale from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Items for sale include books, DVDs, CDs and LPs, all priced at $1 or less. The bookstore is located on 11th Place behind the Hermosa Beach Community Center, 710 Pier Ave., west of Pacific Coast Highway and the Veterans Memorial and across the street from the Alano Club. Free parking is available in the Community Center parking lot next to the tennis courts and skateboard park. The bookstore’s regular hours are 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Mondays and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Fridays. Friends of the Manhattan Beach Library book sale 

The Manhattan Beach Friends of the Library will hold its bi-monthly book sale from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in the library conference room. Most books are priced at $1 or less. Additionally, inside the library near the elevator there is an ongoing book sale section that is restocked weekly. Jazz concert

Airmen of Note, a United States Air Force jazz ensemble, will give a concert at 3 p.m. in Marsee Auditorium at El Camino College, 16007 Crenshaw Blvd., Torrance. Holiday event

The North Manhattan Beach commercial district will hold its annual Holiday Stroll and Walk-About from 5-9 p.m. on Dec. 1. Families are invited to meet Santa, enjoy a petting zoo and Christmas carols, enter an ugly Christmas sweater contest, help judge a surfboard decorating contest and visit pop-up holiday stores. It all takes place on Highland Avenue between 32nd and 40th streets.

Comedy Sportz HSL Home Match 

Mira Costa will host Palos Verdes High School at 7 p.m. on Dec. 2 in the small theater on campus. $5 at the door. All proceeds will go to the Zack Estrin USC Scholarship Fund. 

Sandpipers Holiday Home Tour

Sandpipers will host its 30th annual Holiday Homes Tour Dec. 2-4. The tour showcases curated and distinctive homes in the South Bay decorated and transformed by local artisans and florists. In addition to touring the homes, attendees can visit a holiday boutique and café at the Neptunian Woman’s Club, 920 Highland Ave., Manhattan Beach, featuring wine, food, jewelry, clothing and more. Tickets may be purchased at the presale price of $30 at SandpipersHHT2022.eventbrite.com. Prices go up to $35 starting Dec. 2. 

Holiday Pop-Up

Manhattan Beach Nursery School will hold a holiday pop-up from 2-4 p.m. on Dec. 3. Enjoy shopping, snacks and drinks. The pop-up features artists, makers and businesses owned by current and alumni families of MBNS. The nursery address is 1520 Nelson Ave.

Santa Stroll

The fourth annual California Great Santa Stroll, a fundraiser for Mychal’s Learning Place, which assists youths and young adults with developmental disabilities, will take place on Dec. 10. The festive event is a 5K run or walk for all ages and abilities. Scores of Santas will stroll along the Strand from Hermosa Beach to Manhattan Beach and back.
