Baywatch Community Calendar 12-22-22

Michael Moore is among the local writers whose stories are collected in The Dark Waves of Winter, a follow up to The Silver Waves of Summer. A book release party for the new anthology will be hosted by the Hermosa Beach Historical Society on Friday, January 13 at 6 p.m. $5. Spotlight: The Hermosa Beach Museum will host a book signing and reading  of a new anthology, “The Dark Waves of Winter,” on Jan. 13, 6-8 p.m. A follow-up to the critically acclaimed anthology, “The Silver Waves of Summer,” “The Dark Waves of Winter” is a collection of short stories in which the beach again takes center stage. The evening celebration is presented by the Hermosa Beach Historical Society and {pages} a bookstore. Michael Scott Moore and other contributing authors will be sharing stories and signing books. Manhattan Beach art exhibit

Lynn Aldrich’s “Fly High Fly Deep,” an exhibit about environmental conservation, is on display at the Manhattan Beach Art Center through Jan. 1. Viewers are invited to consider the wonder and fragility of life in the sky and sea. The center’s gallery is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. New art exhibit

Manhattan Beach native Shane Foley, a 3D print designer and artist, has a new art show at Culture Brewing Co., 327 Manhattan Beach Blvd., Manhattan Beach. The exhibit, on display through December, features a variety of digital and physical art projects, from porcelain ceramic art to 3D printing and digital design.

Dylan Hannon will present “Othonas for the Collector” at the South Coast Cactus & Succulent Society meeting on Jan. 8. Hannon, a curator at The Huntington Botanical Gardens, will present a brief overview and cultivation requirements of the diverse succulent Othonna, which is excellent in a rock garden or as an indoor houseplant. Evening Book Club

On Jan. 9 bibliophiles can join a facilitated discussion of “The Book of Form and Emptiness” by Ruth Ozeki in the Meeting Room of the Manhattan Beach Public Library beginning at 6:30 p.m. A limited amount of titles will be available for book club attendees. Chamber concert

Prize-winning pianist Claire Huangci will join the Chamber Orchestra of the South Bay for a concert on Jan. 15 at Armstrong Theatre, 3330 Civic Center Drive, Torrance. Parking is free. Slack Key Festival

Back for a sixteenth year, the Southern California Slack Key Festival will take place on Jan. 15 at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center, 1935 Manhattan Beach Blvd., Redondo Beach. George Kuo, The Mākaha Sons, Sonny Lim, Kamuela Kimokeo, Jeff Peterson, Jim “Kimo” West, Bryan Tolentino, Ka’ihi Kimokeo and Kainani Kahaunaele will be performing live. Guided nature hike

Enjoy a free guided tour of Abalone Cove in Rancho Palos Verdes at 2 p.m. on Sunday Jan. 22. Los Serenos docents will lead the hike. Participants will walk past unique flora and fauna and explore tide pools teeming with marine life. Moderate to strenuous. This is a kid-friendly hike but the trails and rocky beach are unsuitable for baby strollers. No dogs allowed on the beach. Rain cancels.
