Spotlight: Slack Key Festival

The Southern California Slack Key Festival returns for a sixteenth year on Jan. 15 at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center, 1935 Manhattan Beach Blvd. George Kuo, The Mākaha Sons, Sonny Lim, Kamuela Kimokeo, Jeff Peterson, Jim “Kimo” West, Bryan Tolentino, Ka’ihi Kimokeo and Kainani Kahaunaele will be performing live. The festival is billed as the biggest Hawaiian music event on the U.S. mainland. There will also be a marketplace from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Open to the public, the marketplace  features a variety of island themed gifts, home decor, accessories, clothing, Hawaiian plate lunches, authentic island-style shaved ice and outdoor entertainment. Youth art showcase

Resin Gallery is hosting an exhibition featuring art made by members of the Young Artist Society. The evening also includes live painting by Emmi Ayers, a sticker contest and a collaborative piece in which guests are invited to participate. Doors open at 5 p.m. Free admission, open to all ages. Recycled Origami Workshop for Kids

Learn about the ancient art of origami and learn how to create four to five origami figures using old newspapers, magazines or any other paper you have at home. For children ages 5 and up. This virtual program is from 4-5 p.m. To register, go to lacountylibrary.org/virtual-programming.

Virtual Mindfulness Drop-In

Evening Storytime with Alex

The Redondo Beach Public Library invites families to enjoy storytime at the Main Library. Come in pajamas or just as you are. 5-5:30 p.m. at 303 N. Pacific Coast Library.

Spanish Storytime

Children ages 4-7 are invited to listen to stories in Spanish at the Redondo Beach Public Library’s North Branch. This storytime is hosted by a teen volunteer. 3:30-4 p.m. at 2000 Artesia Blvd.

South Coast Cactus & Succulent Society

Dylan Hannon will present “Othonas for the Collector” at the South Coast Cactus & Succulent Society meeting on Jan. 8. Hannon, a curator at The Huntington Botanical Gardens, will present a brief overview and cultivation requirements of the diverse succulent Othonna, which is excellent in a rock garden or as an indoor houseplant. Chamber concert

Prize-winning pianist Claire Huangci will join the Chamber Orchestra of the South Bay for a concert on Jan. 15 at Armstrong Theatre, 3330 Civic Center Drive, Torrance. Parking is free. There will be a concert preview at 6:15 p.m., followed by the concert at 7 p.m. Tickets are $63 and can be purchased in person, by calling (310) 781-7171 and at arts.torranceca.gov

Guided nature hike

Enjoy a free guided tour of Abalone Cove in Rancho Palos Verdes at 2 p.m. on Sunday Jan. 22. Los Serenos docents will lead the hike. Participants will walk past unique flora and fauna and explore tide pools teeming with marine life. Moderate to strenuous. This is a kid-friendly hike but the trails and rocky beach are unsuitable for baby strollers. No dogs allowed on the beach. Rain cancels. Parking at Abalone Cove is extremely limited; carpooling is highly recommended. For more information, go to losserenos.org

Educators to be honored

Palos Verdes Peninsula Rotary is preparing to honor nine outstanding educators from public and private schools on the Peninsula. Now in its 42nd year, “Educator of the Year” will take place  on Feb. 9 at Palos Verdes Golf Club. There will be a pre-event reception at 5:45 p.m., followed by dinner and the program.
