Spotlight: The Southern California Slack Key Festival is coming to the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center on Jan. 16, bringing with it some of the biggest names in Hawaiian music. The festival showcases Grammy-winning slack key guitarists, as well as acclaimed hula dancers, special guest performers and a free to the public Island Marketplace. The lineup includes George Kuo, an elder in the Hawaiian music community, Jim “Kimo” West, Makana, Jeff Peterson, Kenneth Makuakane, Patrick Landeza & Sons, Ian O’Sullivan, Pomaika'i & Malie Lyman, Alan Akaka and Patrick “Kaipo” Asing. The concert is at 2 p.m. The Island Marketplace is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and features island themed gifts, home décor, accessories, apparel, Hawaiian food, shave ice and outdoor entertainment. CPR, first aid classes

Registration is open for adult and pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED training at the Joslyn Center in Manhattan Beach. Classes will be held on Saturdays in 2022. The dates are Jan. 8, Feb. 5, April 2, June 11, Aug. 6, Oct. 8 and Dec. 3. Each class is from 8 a.m-3 p.m. and limited to 20 persons. Must be 18 or older.

Participants must pre-enroll to ensure a spot in class. To pre-enroll, email Jeanne at 1certtraining@gmail.com with your full name, phone number, email address and home address.

There is no charge for residents of Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach.

The classes are presented by the Manhattan Beach Community Emergency Response Team.

Redondo Beach Super Bowl 10k/5k Run/Walk

Registration is open for the 44th annual Redondo Beach Super Bowl 10k Run & 5k Run/Walk, which will take place on Feb. 13.

There’s also a Health & Fitness Expo that starts on Feb. 12, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and continues race day from 6-11 a.m.

The start/finish line and the expo will be at 200 Portofino Way. The race course will take runners along the Redondo Beach harbor, Esplanade and waterfront, with the course ending at the Seaside Lagoon.

A 1k Kids Fun Run begins at 7 a.m., followed by the 10k at 7:30 a.m., the 10k Baby Buggy Run at 8:15 a.m. and the 5k Run/Walk at 8:30 a.m. 

The entry fee for the 10k, 5k and Baby Buggy 10k is $45 Dec. 1-Feb. 11 and $50 race weekend. The Kid’s Fun Run is $20 until Feb. 11 and $25 race weekend.

New Year’s Day nature walk

Join the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy on New Year’s Day for a guided nature walk at George F. Canyon. You will be guided by a trained naturalist docent to discover a unique variety of wildlife in their canyon habitat with views of the LA Basin.  

Meet at 10:30 a.m. on the back patio of the George F. Canyon Nature Center, 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.

No RSVP required. Rain cancels.

CSCRB Welcome Orientation

Find out what Cancer Support Community Redondo Beach (CSCRB) is all about in this virtual orientation meeting scheduled for 11 a.m. on Zoom. Participants will be given a virtual tour of the community and learn about the many free programs that CSCRB offers cancer patients and their loved ones. The opportunity to register for a virtual weekly support group or monthly networking group will also be provided.

Sacred Expressions: The Art of Bookmaking

At this workshop Ginger Doner will demonstrate the process of designing, creating and completing a simple book. Doner is an artist whose interests include mixed media painting, glass fusing, metalsmithing and creating handmade books. Using a variety of mixed media techniques, she has created unique journals, scrapbooks and photo albums.

Club meeting

The South Coast Cactus & Succulent Society will meet on Zoom at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 9. Kelly Griffin will give a talk describing his visit to Oaxaca, Mexico. Griffin has traveled extensively worldwide documenting plants and collecting seed and pollen for propagation and hybridization.

Cancer Support: De-Clutter Your Life

Cancer Support Community Redondo Beach (CSCRB) offers this free workshop led by Regina Lark, owner of A Clear Path: Professional Organizing and Productivity. In this fun and interactive workshop, participants will learn to create a de-clutter plan and how to let go of stuff. Lark will provide tips for organizing a yard sale, selling things online and more.

MLK Jr. Day of Service  

Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. You will help care for the White Point Native Plant Demonstration Garden by planting native shrubs, removing invasive weeds, watering native plants and more.

Family Nature Club: Wildlife in Winter

Join the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy for its next Virtual Family Nature Club, scheduled for 9 a.m. on Jan. 29. Attendees will learn about the special adaptations animals have that help them survive in the winter. A fun craft is planned, as well.

Compost, shredding event

Athens Services will host a compost giveaway and paper shredding event from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 5 in the parking lot at the Hermosa Beach Community Center, 710 Pier Ave. The event is for Hermosa Beach residents only. 

Attendees are asked to bring their own gloves, shovels and bags for the compost giveaway. Paper will be shredded on site and each participant is limited to three banker box-size boxes each. No hazardous waste will be accepted.
