American Martyrs 5K

The 43rd annual American Martyrs 5K Run/Walk will get underway at 8 a.m. in Manhattan Beach. To register and for more information, go to ams5k.org.

 

Event Spotlight: Happy Hour with History

The February installment of the Hermosa Beach Historical Society & Museum’s Happy Hour with History features oral historian Helen Yoshida. Her presentation, “Voices from the U.S. Department of Justice Internment Camps During WWII,” pulls from oral history interviews and archival documents. Yoshida holds a masters degree in history, with a focus on oral history, from California State University, Fullerton. The event is at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26 at the Hermosa Museum, 710 Pier Ave. Tickets are $5 and available on Eventbrite or can be purchased at the door, based on availability. Cash bar. HBHS members receive a drink ticket at the door.

Pacific brim, at Torrance Art

The Torrance Art Museum has a new exhibit: “Bridging the Pacific-LA Art of the Japanese Diaspora.” This year marks the 50th anniversary of the sister city program between Kashiwa, Japan and Torrance. To celebrate this milestone, the Torrance Art Museum is presenting an exhibition of the artistic talents of the Japanese American community based in Southern California. The exhibit runs through March 4 and is open 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturday. Admission is free. For more information, go to torranceartmuseum.com.

Winning coach at sports luncheon

The South Bay Athletic Club (SBAC) meeting this week will feature Harbor College assistant basketball coach Gary Cain. The Seahawks were 24-4 in the regular season and 9-1 in conference play. The SBAC meets every Friday at noon at H.T. Grill, 1701 S. Catalina Ave., Redondo Beach. The luncheon meeting is open to the public; cost is $30.

Coping with Head and Neck Cancer

Cancer Support Community South Bay is offering this free workshop led by Dr. Deborah Wong, a clinical professor of medicine at UCLA and the UCLA director of clinical trials for head and neck cancers. Participants will learn how to cope with head and neck cancer related challenges during treatment and survivorship. The latest updates will be shared and a question-and-answer session will be offered at the end of the workshop. 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Zoom. The Manhattan Beach Police Department will hold a community town hall at 6 p.m. at Joslyn Community Center to discuss crime issues and crime trends. Join the Palos Verdes Library District on March 4 for an evening with author David Calloway, who will be discussing his book, “If Someday Comes: A Slave’s Story of Freedom,” about his great-grandfather’s experiences in the Civil War. Public safety open house

The Redondo Beach Police Department will present a public safety open house on March 5, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Redondo Beach Police Department Civic Center, located at City Hall, 415 Diamond St. There will be music, demonstrations from the K-9 unit, S.W.A.T. and the Redondo Beach Fire Department, food trucks, shaved ice and more.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Hermosa Beach is set for March 11. The parade is from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., followed by music at Pier Plaza from 1-3 p.m. Pier Avenue and Hermosa Avenue will be closed to vehicle traffic for the occasion. For more information, go to hbchamber.net/parade
