Baywatch Community Calendar 2-3-22

Spotlight: Come for the sunset, stay for the vibes. Music lovers can dance, drink and eat at an open-air, silent disco party set for 4-8 p.m. on Feb. 6 in Hermosa Beach. Sunset Vibes @ Vista will feature three stages and nine DJ’s playing music simultaneously. Guests receive a pair of high-fidelity headphones and can choose the music they want to listen to. The DJ’s are cptnfunk, Emmber, British, Plurpammy, Dance Armstrong, Big Tuna, Neko, Eric B and Boogie. It all takes place on Vista’s outdoor patio, a stone’s throw from the sand. Super Bowl 10K/5K

Registration is open for the 44th annual Redondo Beach Super Bowl 10k Run & 5k Run/Walk, which will take place on Feb. 13.

There’s also a Health & Fitness Expo that starts on Feb. 12, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and continues race day from 6-11 a.m.

The start/finish line and the expo will be at 200 Portofino Way. The race course will take runners along the Redondo Beach harbor, Esplanade and waterfront, with the course ending at the Seaside Lagoon.

A 1k Kid’s Fun Run begins at 7 a.m., followed by the 10k at 7:30 a.m., the 10k Baby Buggy Run at 8:15 a.m. and the 5k Run/Walk at 8:30 a.m. 

The entry fee for the 10k, 5k and Baby Buggy 10k is $45 Dec. 1-Feb. 11 and $50 race weekend. The Kid’s Fun Run is $20 until Feb. 11 and $25 race weekend.

Find out what Cancer Support Community South Bay (CSC South Bay) —formerly Cancer Support Community Redondo Beach — is all about in this virtual orientation meeting. Participants will be given a virtual tour of the community and learn about the many free programs that CSC South Bay offers cancer patients and their loved ones. The Brett Mendoza Memorial Alumni Game is scheduled for noon at Peninsula High School. Mendoza, a baseball coach at Peninsula High, died in 2018 following a traffic accident. He was 31. The Mira Costa High School Drama/Tech Department will hold its annual AIDS benefit at 7 p.m. in the school’s small theater. The students will present a type of variety show with different acts. CSC South Bay will offer a free workshop, led by Monica Kahn, founder of Helen’s Room, from 10-11 a.m. on Feb. 10 on Zoom. Helen’s Room is a resource for cancer patients. Kahn will teach participants about the pros and cons and care of breast prostheses, mastectomy bras, hats, scarves, turbans and wigs. Nature walk

Take a nature walk, guided by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy, at 1 p.m. on Feb. 12 at  Abalone Cove Reserve. Situated between Portuguese Point and Inspiration Point, the secluded Sacred Cove features wonderful rock formations edged with tide pools and a channel into a sea cave. Moderate to strenuous. Parking is $6 for the first two hours. Join Manhattan Village and Modern Makers Mart for a Valentine-themed day of shopping and entertainment. Gardening meeting

The next meeting of the South Coast Cactus & Succulent Society is at 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 13 via Zoom. The presenter for February is Jackson Burkholder, whose talk is titled, “Sulcorebutia: A Virtual Tour Through Bolivia.” Burkholder will discuss the taxonomy and biology of the genus Sulcorebutia and explain how to care for these flowering cactus native to Bolivia. His virtual tour highlights his collection of these plants native to Bolivia. Compost, shredding event

Athens Services will host a compost giveaway and paper shredding event from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 5 in the parking lot at the Hermosa Beach Community Center, 710 Pier Ave. The event is for Hermosa Beach residents only. Attendees are asked to bring their own gloves, shovels and bags for the compost giveaway. Paper will be shredded on site and each participant is limited to three banker box-size boxes each. No hazardous waste will be accepted.

 

Charity event

Vistas for Children’s spring fundraiser, Rosé All Day, will be held at 10 a.m. on March 6 at Palos Verdes Golf Club, 3301 Via Campesina. There will be a boutique, luncheon, fashion show, live auction and a raffle. There will also be an online auction preceding the event. All proceeds benefit children with special needs and their families in the South Bay. Tickets are $250. An additional $50 buys you rosé all day.
