Spotlight:  The Hermosa Beach Memorial Day Fiesta returns Saturday through Monday, May 27, 28 and 29.  The Fiesta will take place throughout the downtown Hermosa Beach area, from Pacific Coast Highway to the beach. 

Highlights include: 

The Carnival: Upper Pier Avenue, between Bard Street and Monterey Boulevard, with live music featuring young, local musicians, as well as  rides, games, exhibits from local nonprofits, and food and beverages. A Teen Lounge will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.  

Beach Concert: 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., just south of the Pier. The line-up includes  Jeremy Buck, Missus Jones (Amy Winehouse tribute), The Long Run (an Eagles tribute) , Peace Frog (Doors tribute), K-Tel Allstars, Forever Rod (Rod Stewart tribute), Willowake, The Anti Groupies, and ti85. 

The Garden: $5/day cover charge and will have a game area, beverages, and live music playing daily, from 11 a.m. 7 p.m. Groups include So Rad, Hi Fi Soundtrack, Rock Stallion, Safety Orange, Joker’s Hand and Brobots. 

The Makers Mercado: 225-plus vendors. 

Food Fair: on 11th Street, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. 

Bicycle Corral: will be located between 10th street and 11th Street. 

Additional activities: music in front of Java Man, at Manhattan and Pier avenues; a Sunset Vibes Silent Disco Saturday night at Vista, and a Memorial Day ceremony on the beach stage.

U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral Carola List will serve as Grand Marshal of the 61st Annual Armed Forces Day Parade. As the Coast Guard’s “Chief Engineer,” Admiral Lis is responsible for the service’s facilities, its 2,110 cutters, and its 200 aircraft. She leads a 5,600 person workforce.

Memorial Day Weekend Armed Forces Day Parade & Celebration

The 61st annual Armed Forces Day Parade & Celebration in Torrance kicks off Friday, May 19 and continues through Sunday, May 21.

Highlights of the three-day event:

— A concert featuring the Air Force Band of the West. The band plays twice on Friday, at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m., at the James R. Armstrong Theatre, 3330 Civic Center Drive. Free admission. The 7:30 p.m. performance is only open to members of the military. 

— 5K for Freedom in Tribute to Louis Zamperini. The 5K is Saturday and begins at 8 a.m. at Del Amo Fashion Center. 

— The Armed Forces Day Parade, also on Saturday. The parade begins at 1:30 p.m. at Crenshaw Boulevard and travels west on Torrance Boulevard to Madrona Avenue. It will end around 3:30 p.m.

Teen policing program

South High class reunion

Live theater

New art exhibit

The Pastel Society of Southern California’s 14th annual gallery exhibition showcasing members’ artworks is on display at the Promenade on the Peninsula through Sunday, May 21. The exhibition, located in Suite 117, features 87 artworks, including landscapes, seascapes, still life, florals, animals and portraits. Most are for sale. The Hermosa Five-O Senior Activity Center will host its annual Open House Anniversary Celebration from 4-6 p.m. at the Hermosa Beach Community Center, 710 Pier Ave. The city invites anyone who is interested in learning about the center’s programming to stop by for snacks, class and activity demonstrations, live entertainment and instructor meet & greets.

Older Adult Health Fair

The annual Older Adult Health Fair is from 8:30 a.m.-noon at the Joslyn Community Center, 1601 N. Valley Drive, Manhattan Beach. There will be scheduled screenings for anemia, blood pressure, oral cancer and pulse oximetry. Doppler screening or stroke screening is available for $20. There will also be free to-go lunches, raffles and prizes. Free admission. Dial-A-Ride is providing transportation for older residents of Manhattan Beach. Call 310-545-3500 to arrange a ride.

Acupressure and Cancer

Cancer Support Community South Bay (CSC South Bay) is offering this free workshop led by licensed acupuncturist Ana Paula Duarte. Participants will learn how to give themselves an acupressure massage with specific points to relieve some of the most common side effects of cancer treatment, such as nausea and hot flashes. 11 a.m.-noon at 2601 Airport Drive, Suite 100, Torrance. USA Diving chairman Dave Gascon and South Torrance High baseball coach Grady Sain will be the speakers at this week’s South Bay Athletic Club luncheon. The SBAC meets at noon every Friday at H.T. Grill, 1701 S. Catalina Ave., Redondo Beach. The luncheon is open to the public; cost is $30.

RUHS Football Pancake Breakfast and Flag Football Tournament

Book sale

The Hermosa Beach Friends of the Library Bookstore will hold its monthly Saturday sale from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Items for sale include books, DVDs, CDs and LPs and nearly new jigsaw puzzles, all priced at $1 or less. The bookstore is located on 11th Place behind the Hermosa Beach Community Center, 710 Pier Ave. Free parking is available in the Community Center parking lot next to the tennis courts and skateboard park. Julian Katz Bike Corral dedication

Join the city of Hermosa Beach for the dedication of the Julian Katz Bike Corral, 9 am. at the bike corral on Hermosa Avenue at 10th Street. Katz was a cycling advocate in the South Bay.

Julian Katz Memorial Bike Ride

Led by Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi, the family-friendly ride will be a casual paced opportunity to enjoy a ride along The Strand with South Bay neighbors and friends. Route begins at Miramar Park (201 Paseo De La Playa, Redondo Beach) and ends at the Manhattan Beach Pier. Meet at 9:30 a.m. Dress appropriately and don’t forget to bring a helmet.

Blood drive

A blood drive will be held in memory of Mark Vasquez, a Manhattan Beach police officer who died on May 15, 2011, from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. at Joslyn Community Center, 1601 N. Valley Drive, Manhattan Beach. Vasquez joined the police department in 2005 and worked in patrol until 2007 when he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma.
