An opening reception for an exhibit of eight decades of photos and documents from the Sandpipers philanthropic club was hosted by the Hermosa Beach Historical Museum last month. Sandpipers was formed in 1931 when seven Hermosa Beach women decided to do something to help their neighbors affected by the Great Depression. They named themselves after the “busiest bird on the beach.” Today, the more than 800 Sandpipers remain focused on meeting the needs of the South Bay community through philanthropy, including their famed Holiday Baskets and college scholarships.
