Scholar Athletes – Mira Costa kicker Brendan Sofen was named the National Football Federation’s Scholar Athlete of the Year at a dinner held at the Culver City Radisson where 63 players from the Los Angeles, including 24 from the South Bay, were honored. Sofen has a 3.97 GPA and will attend Princeton in the fall. Other nominees include Adam Ammentorp (Redondo), Brett Darragh (Mira Costa) and Derek Largent (Mira Costa).

Aquatics – Sign-ups are ongoing for the Junior Lifeguard Condition Program held at Mira Costa High School Pool. Online registration is available now until Thursday, April 7 at www.mcaquatics.com.  On-site registration will be available at the Mira Costa Pool Monday, April 11 from 4-5 p.m. Three Mon./Wed./Thurs. sessions are available from 5:15-6:15 p.m. Session 1 will be held April 11-April 22; Session 2 from April 25-May 5 and Session 3 from May 9-19. Volleyball – Boys and girls ages 8 to 18 years old are invited to take part in Beach Cities Volleyball’s Summer Indoor Volleyball Program. The program will beheld in July and August allowing players of all skill sets, beginner to advanced, to have fun and improve their volleyball skills. Each week-long camp features a 5-star coach-to-player ratio and lunch or dinner for full-day participants. Full-day and half-day programs are available. Week 1: July 18-22, American Martyrs (Manhattan Beach); Week 2:  July 25-29, Westchester Park or Christ Lutheran Gym (Palos Verdes); Week 3: Aug. 1-5, Rolling Hills Prep Gym (Torrance); Week 4: August 8th – 12th at Rolling Hills Prep Gym (Torrance); Week 5: Aug. 15-19, Vistamar High School (El Segundo). Registration and volunteer positions are open for the United States youth Volleyball League (USYVL) Spring Season. The 8-week league in El Segundo at Washington Park and Hermosa Beach at South Park will run from April to June and is also looking for volunteer coaches, site directors and clinicians (volleyball instructors). Fitness – A Spring AdventureCamp for kids ages 4-12 will be held Monday April 4 through Friday, April 8 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at AdventurePlex, 1701 Marine Ave., Manhattan Beach. Activities include rock climbing, ropes course (ages 8 and up), crafts, AdventureRoom play, arts and crafts, cooperative games on the Sports Court and gardening. Registration is open for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life Beach Cities to be held from 9 a.m. July 23 until 9 a.m. July 24 at Alta Vista Elementary School in Redondo Beach. Supporting Redondo and Hermosa Beach communities, the family-oriented event helps raise funds to help eliminate cancer while celebrating the lives of those who have faced the disease. AdventurePlex, 1701 Marine Ave., Manhattan Beach is offering its Open Rock Wall and Ropes Course on Saturdays from 12-3 p.m. (Rock Wall is also open Sundays from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.). Whether a single child, the whole family, or just a group of friends (Ages 5 and up for rock wall, 8 and up for ropes course), the course provides challenges of solving problems and overcoming obstacles. Groups of seven will start every hour and will take approximately 45 minutes to complete the courses. Advance registration is recommended. Cost is $8-$20 depending on activities. Triathlon – Registration is open for the 7th annual Redondo Beach Triathlon sponsored by CaliforniaHealthPlans.com. The sprint event will be held Sunday, June 12 at 7:30 a.m. Sunday at the Veteran’s Park/Marina area in Redondo Beach. All of the proceeds go to Cheer for Children, a nonprofit organization that gives seasonal parties and raises money for acutely ill children at Harbor UCLA Medical Center. The USAT sanctioned scenic course event consists of a 1/2-mile swim, 6-mile bike, and 2-mile run. Space is limited to the first 600 entries. A non-competitive mini-sprint (half the distances) is also available. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each division and the top two relay teams. Sprint fees are $70 (ages 13-19 and 65 and older), $80 (ages 20-64), $110 (relay). Mini-sprint fees are $60 and $90 for the relay. Add $10 starting April 1. To register, visit www.rbtriathlon.com.

Football – Registration is ongoing for the Co-Ed Flag Football on the Beach leagues which will begin in May at 10th Street and The Strand in Hermosa Beach. The Wednesday league starts on May 4 and the Thursday league begins on May 11. Registration is by team only and can be made at the Hermosa Beach Community Center, 710 Pier Ave. or online at www.HermosaBCH.org prior to the first day of competition. Games in the non-contact 4-on-4 (2 guys, 2 girls) passing leagues consist of two 20-minute halves per game in a seven-week season plus two weeks of playoffs. Cost is $265 per team. Former USC and NFL player Kevin Ellison returns to his alma mater, holding Saturday football camps at Redondo Union High School. Ellison Football 101 focuses on understanding the game better; learning how to study to become a step ahead physically and mentally and; maximizing each player’s talent. The camp is open to players ages 13-17 and runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday. Cost is $35 per session. AYSO Region 34 South Redondo Beach Boys U14 All Stars became the first U14 team to advance from AYSO 34 to the AYSO California State Games. The team finished in 4th place in the State on March 13 and finished the tournament season with a 19-4-2 record. The boys also captured the championships of the Torrance Christmas Classic and Corona Pony Express tournaments and finished second in AYSO Beach Cities Area play and in AYSO Section play.
