Aquatics

The annual Hennessey’s Paddleboard Festival will be held Saturday at Avenue I, Redondo Beach. The event includes the Junior Guard race, the Rainbow Sandals Cup series and the US Paddleboard Championships. The 9-mile race goes to the Palos Verdes buoy and back. Due to popular demand, Beach Cities Swimming located at Redondo Union High School is expanding open public swim. Hours are 1-4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Lap Swim is available from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Saturday and Sunday from 1-4 p.m.  Open Swim and Lap Swimming are $3 for Redondo residents and $4 for non residents. The King Harbor Yacht Club hosts this 20th annual Tom Collier Regatta on Saturday, July 16. The event is held in memory of the club’s former sailing star, who succumbed to cancer at 31. Proceeds go to the cancer research program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. www.khyc.org.

Running

Registration is open for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life Beach Cities to be held from 9 a.m. July 23 until 9 a.m. July 24 at Alta Vista Elementary School in Redondo Beach. Supporting Redondo and Hermosa Beach communities, the family-oriented event helps raise funds to help eliminate cancer while celebrating the lives of those who have faced the disease. Tennis

The two-weekend single-elimination Manhattan Beach Tennis Open will be played at Live Oak Park from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sat.-Sun., July 9-10 and 16-17. Volleyball 

The 2nd Annual Lady Seahawks Volleyball Tournament will be held July 29 at 2 p.m. in the Redondo Union High School gym. All varsity players, family, alumni and coaches are welcome. Teams consist of 5-7 players with men hitting from the back row only. Player fee of $10 includes t-shirt and drinks. Deadline to register is July 26. The 13th Annual BarryBob Invitational is slated for Saturday, July 9 at 9th Street in Manhattan Beach. The event is a 4-person committee draw beach volleyball tournament with both adult and junior divisions. Held in memory of long-time Manhattan Beach residents Barry Walmer and Bob Cleary, the event is a mix of current professional players, local talent and legends of the sport. California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) is hosting men’s tournaments throughout the weekend of July 16-17 at Rosecrans in Manhattan Beach. Saturday’s action features Icaza Construction Men’s B competition. Sunday includes Icaza Men’s Masters and the Sharkeez Co-ed A and Fours Open competition. Registration and volunteer positions are now open for the United States Youth Volleyball League (USYVL) Fall Season. The 8-week league in Hermosa Beach at South Park will run from September until November. The USYVL is also looking for volunteer coaches, site directors, and clinicians (volleyball instructors). Olympic gold medalist and former professional beach volleyball star Eric Fonoimoana will be holding an Elite Beach Volleyball Academy for two weeks at the south side of the Hermosa Beach Pier. The goal of the camp is to produce Division 1 talent for girls to earn a beach scholarship and boys to become a better indoor player by becoming a better-rounded player. The Academy runs from 12-3 p.m. July 18-21 and July 25-28 for boys and girls ages 12-18. Boys and girls ages 8-11 meet from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. July 25-28. Registration is available through the city of Hermosa Beach. 

Boys and girls ages 8 to 18 years old are invited to take part in Beach Cities Volleyball’s Summer Indoor Volleyball Program. The program will be held in July and August allowing players of all skill sets, beginner to advanced, to have fun and improve their volleyball skills. Each week-long camp features a 5-star coach-to-player ratio and lunch or dinner for full-day participants. Full-day and half-day programs are available. Week 1: July 18-22, American Martyrs (Manhattan Beach); Week 2:  July 25-29, Westchester Park or Christ Lutheran Gym (Palos Verdes); Week 3: Aug. 1-5, Rolling Hills Prep Gym (Torrance); Week 4: August 8th – 12th at Rolling Hills Prep Gym (Torrance); Week 5: Aug. 15-19, Vistamar High School (El Segundo). Fitness

The Beach Cities Health District Center for Health & Fitness is holding an Open House Saturday from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. with free class demos, food tastings, prizes and more. AdventurePlex, 1701 Marine Ave., Manhattan Beach is offering its Open Rock Wall and Ropes Course on Saturdays from 12-3 p.m. (Rock Wall is also open Sundays from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.). Whether a single child, the whole family, or just a group of friends (Ages 5 and up for rock wall, 8 and up for ropes course), the course provides challenges of solving problems and overcoming obstacles. Groups of seven will start every hour and will take approximately 45 minutes to complete the courses. Advance registration is recommended. Cost is $8-$20 depending on activities.
