The motto for the Beach Decathlon is part Churchill (“Nevah give up) and part Peter Pan (“Never grow up”). All 10 events are  challenging, and slightly tweaked, explained Derek Levy. He and his brother Mark and dad Sol have staged the event  at Neptune Street on the weekend after Labor Day for the past 22 years.
Four-man teams compete for bragging rights by racing fin-less paddleboards  and waterlogged kayaks and shot-putting bocce balls (they don’t roll well in sand).  Interference is encouraged in the surf contest, unsuspecting sunbathers serve as obstacles on the Frisbee golf course, over the line is played barehanded and arseshoes are played with toilet seats.
Spectators are few, and generally keep their distance. Â The photos show why.
