Scores of people gathered at the Standing Room for Leadership Hermosa Beach’s annual Beach Ball in February.The group received a record number of nominations this year for its Emerging Leader awards, which honor those who have distinguished themselves with contributions to improve the city. This year’s youth award went to Kina Desai, a student at Hermosa Valley who organized an effort to collect old DVDs and video games and donate them to charity. The Business/nonprofit Award was claimed by ShockBoxx, the Cypress Avenue art gallery opened by local artists Michael Collins and Laura Schuler. The Adult Award went to Betsy Ryan, who has devoted her time (and home) to a head-spinning number of causes, ranging from hurricane relief to aiding Syrian refugees. Funds raised at the event will go to support ongoing Leadership Hermosa projects.
