Dig for Kids Dinner for Champions honors Marlowe, Obradovich, Hanley

Chris "Geeter" McGee gets another lesson from his mentor and evening honoree Chris Marlowe

Three of beach volleyball’s most memorable players were honored last month on the 50th Anniversary of the Manhattan Beach Open during the Dig For Kids Dinner of Champions at Raleigh Studios. Chris Marlowe, now the play-by-play commentator for the Denver Nuggets, and a volleyball commentator for the past five Olympics, was recognized for his five Manhattan Beach Open victories. Linda Robertson Hanley was also recognized for winning five Manhattan Beach Opens. Hanley and Karch Kiraly are the only two volleyball players to have won open tournaments in four different decades. Longtime Manhattan Beach resident Steve Obradovich was the evening’s third honoree. His single Manhattan Beach Open title in 1976 was with Marlowe as his teammate. Obradovich also led USC to an indoor championship. The evening featured a fashion show, food and wine, courtesy of local businesses. The Trade Coach was the title sponsor. Dig for Kids was founded by Manhattan Open winner and Olympic gold Medalist Eric Fonoimoana to provide after school education and athletic coaching to underprivileged  kids.
