Beach Tennis: The Beach Tennis tournament season kicks off this weekend with the three-day “March Madness” tournament to be held at 14th Street and The Strand in Hermosa Beach. Sanctioned by the International Federation of Beach Tennis (IFBT), the G3 event begins Friday at 5 p.m. with pro and amateur mixed doubles pool play. Sunday’s action begins at 11 a.m. featuring men’s and women’s pro and amateur doubles competition. On Sunday, a free introduction to beach tennis for ages 9 to 90 will be held from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. with basic instruction, drills and open play. Paddles are provided (RSVP at beachtennisassociation@gmail.com). The tournament’s mixed playoffs follow at 3 p.m. The event is sponsored by the USTA and Beach Cities Health District. Volleyball: 2014 National Prepvolleyball.com Coach of the Year Tommy Chaffins is holding a 4th thru 8th grade boys and girls volleyball spring break camp at Redondo Union High School.  Camp dates are Monday through Friday, April 6-10 from 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Cost is $275 for the week or $75 per day. Baseball: Beach City Baseball Academy (BCBA) is accepting applications for its “Sixth Tool” $5,000 scholarship. Deadline is May 31. Applicants must reside within 10 miles of Beach City Baseball Academy’s facility in El Segundo and be a graduating 2015 high school senior. Final award is contingent upon applicant’s acceptance and attendance at an accredited college in the United States (university, four-year, or junior college), receipt of an offer to participate in that institution’s baseball program and letter of recommendation from their high school baseball coach. Football: Registration is open for the Thursday night Co-Ed Flag Football on the Beach League in Hermosa Beach. Games are held at 10th St. and The Strand at 6:30 p.m. beginning April 9 and are played with two 20-minute halves, alternating guy and girl quarterbacks. A new Sunday night league begins April 26. Registration is offered as a team only and available at the Hermosa Beach Community Center, 710 Pier Ave. or online at prankmonkey.org. Entry fee is $265 per team with a 10 person roster limit. Cycling: The 3rd Annual Tour de Pier, a unique fundraising event that brings one of the hottest indoor fitness activities – stationary cycling – to the Manhattan Beach Pier, takes place Sunday, May 17. Four 50-minute sessions begin at 9 a.m. Whether riding solo or as a team, each bike requires a fundraising minimum of $500. For more information, visit tourdepier.org.

 

Surfing: The South Bay Boardriders continues its South Bay Surf Series on Saturdays. The series features all age groups, from the under-9 Micro Grom Division to the over-50 Legends Division. Participants receive t-shirts and other goodies and finalists from each division win prize packages. Surf Series ratings winner receive prizes such as free trips, surfboards, wetsuits and more. Contests scheduled: Mar. 28 – Becker at 26th St.; April 25 – Spyder at Manhattan Beach Pier. The championships will be held in May. For more information, visit southbayboardriders.com.

 

Swimming: Southern California Aquatics (SCAQ), the largest Masters swimming program in the United States holds a variety of programs at Redondo Union High School. SCAQ holds weekly stroke clinics and ocean workouts as preparation for triathlons, ocean competitions and pool meets with practices fitting most work schedules for swimmers of every level.
