The urge to recognize “the best” is universal, even though everyone knows “the best” to too subjective to be scientific. Best of awards are really gratitude ceremonies. They satisfy people’s need to express appreciation to those whose extra effort makes life a little bit richer than it would be otherwise. “Best of” awards are a way to say “good job” to the hairdresser who makes you feel a little better when you leave the salon than when you arrived and the surf shop that sells grommets and granddads the boards they need, which may not be the potato chip-thin board they want.
Over 3,100 readers expressed their gratitude to local retailers and services in this year’s Easy Reader Best of the Beach voting. That’s more than the number of Hermosans who voted in last week’s general election and more votes than any Manhattan Beach or Redondo Beach council candidate received (though Manhattan council candidate Steve Napolitano was close, with 3,026 votes).
Hermosawave.net hosted the Easy Reader Best Of polling site to make balloting easier for readers. It also made counting the nearly 100 categories on the thousands of ballots a manageable job. And, not incidentally, Hermosawave.net put a check on ballot stuffing. The hundreds of local businesses nominated in this year’s Best of Balloting is a tribute not only to the winners but to all the nominees whose 110 percent effort makes the South Bay the Best Place in the World to Live (as determined by an impartial survey of South Bay elected officials). – Kevin Cody, publisher
