Dive N’ Surf
Dive N’ Surf is to ocean lovers what REI is to mountain lovers. Its annual yard sale in February, a six-decade-old tradition, is the South Bay’s Black Friday. It’s five decades old Lobster Mobster contest in September that signals the start of lobster season, for which South Bay waters are world-renowned.
If you live in the South Bay and SCUBA dive, odds are you earned your open ocean, PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) certification by training in Dive N Surf’s 12-deep, indoor pool. If you surf in the South Bay, odds are your first wetsuit was a Body Glove suit, the first modern wetsuit, invented in the early 1950s by Dive N’ Surf founders Bob and Bill Meistrell.
Under the guidance of store manager Chris Kelly, who began working at Dive N’ Surf in the repairs department in 2011, under the legendary Jocko Robinson, the store has expanded its customer base to the broader beach culture.
Dive N’ Surf now has a full line of its own apparel for men, women and children, and also offers locals lines like JOL Design, of Hermosa Beach; as well as beach towels, and even kids games, like Tiki Toss and Surf the World Board Game.
While expanding its customer reach, Dive N’ Surf has also expanded its core customer offerings. Since spinning off Body Glove in 2014, Dive N’ Surf has added Body Glove competitors its wetsuit lines, including Rip Curl and Isurus. It has also expanded its surfboard selection, from not just local names, like Jacobs and Plastic Fantastic, but also other popular California names, including Stewart, Takayama, Surf Tech and Wave Storm.
“We’re doing what Bob and Bill did for Body Glove. Making the Dive N’ Surf name synonymous with the beach lifestyle,” Kelly said.
