Rugby: Mira Costa senior Ashley Brownsberger was one of four California athletes to make the United States Junior National Touch Rugby Team. This summer she traveled to Singapore for the World Championship. Starting on the Wing for the American side she scored the game winning Try to give the US 5th place. Justin Johnson, Class of ’16 now attending Life University, was named to the Junior Falcons 7s team. The Falcons are the “farm” team for the United States. Johnson is knocking on the door to become a USA Eagle.

 

Fundraising: The fourth annual “Row for a Reason” will be held Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7-8 at Body One Fitness, 201 Herondo St. in Redondo Beach. The event begins at 4 p.m. Friday, raising funds for Cancer Support Community Redondo Beach. Each $50 donation ensures a half hour time slot. To register visit rowforareason.org. Volleyball: The United States Youth Volleyball League (USYVL) is holding registration for the 2018 fall program in Hermosa Beach. Boys and girls ages 7-15 have the opportunity to learn and play volleyball in an eight-week, coed developmental league. The league runs Sept. 10 through Oct. 29 at South Park. Practices for the league will be held on Mondays 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. and games on Wednesdays 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. Registration is available online at usyvl.org and includes a volleyball, t-shirt, and end of season participation award.

 

Beach Tennis: The Beach Tennis Association (BTA) holds its Indian Summer tournament Sept. 15-16 in Hermosa Beach. Winners will compete in the BTA US Championship Nov. 3-4 in Hermosa Beach. Basketball: The Dave Miller Basketball Academy is offering a unique basketball experience for young players across the South Bay, using the same drills and terminology that Miller taught in the NBA, college, high school and with elite youth teams. Running: The 41st running of the Manhattan Beach 10k takes place on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 7:30 a.m. Founded in 1978 by a group of local runners, the race continues to be a partnership between the City of Manhattan Beach and the Race Committee. The non-profit race benefits various health and fitness enhancements to the recreation facilities of local schools and parks, along with scholarships to Manhattan Beach high school seniors. Lifesaving: The United States Surf Lifesaving Association announced the U.S. National Team that will be competing in the World Championships in Adelaide, Australia this November. Representing the LA County Surf Lifesaving Association will be Renae Jackson and Jenna Solberg on the female team and Tim Burdiak on the men’s. Making the female youth team are Sydney Brouwer and Katelyn Nimsky with Danny Gonzalez named to the male squad.
