Earth Day Celebration & Film Screening of Documentary
Presented by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy
The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy invites the community to join a special Earth Day Celebration & Film Screening on Saturday, April 20. The two-part event will begin with an outdoor volunteer day and a choice of family activities at the White Point Nature Preserve in San Pedro from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and continues later in the day with a screening of the Academy Award nominated National Geographic documentary “Free Solo” at the Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro at 5 p.m.
At White Point Nature Preserve, wildlife-lovers of all ages will have the opportunity to participate in community planting and landscape restoration as well as a choice between an LA City Ranger guided tour, a nature-based art activity, a dryad flute presentation and sale of native plants from the Conservancy’s nursery. Take time to meet young goats, whose voracious appetites help our weed abatement program in an environmentally friendly manner. Acting Executive Director Adrienne Mohan says, “Earth Day is a wonderful way to do something locally and join conservationists around the globe in celebrating the importance of protecting our natural lands.”
Later in the day at 5 pm, the Conservancy will screen “Free Solo” at the historic Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro. The film follows Alex Honnold, the first person to ever free solo climb Yosemite’s 3,000′ El Capitan Wall. With no ropes or safety gear, Honnold completed the greatest feat in rock climbing history. View the film trailer at: www.pvplc.org and select: Earth Day Celebration & Film.
The Earth Day Event will benefit the 102-acre White Point Nature Preserve and Education Center. Sponsors are helping to support the Preserve which fulfills a critical need for open space and urban parkland in our community. At the Preserve, the Conservancy offers educational programs for the community and field trips for local and inner city school children. The Preserve features restored coastal grasslands, handicap accessible trails, a native plant demonstration garden with interpretive signage and magnificent views overlooking the Pacific Ocean. A Nature Education Center offers monthly guided walks, presentations, volunteer opportunities and a third-grade natural history program.
Earth Day Sponsors will enjoy a special guided tour of the White Point Nature Preserve and a pre-film VIP Wine reception prior to the film at the Warner Grand. For information about becoming a sponsor, please visit: www.pvplc.org, and select Earth Day Celebration & Film.
Special thanks to the City of Los Angeles, National Geographic and Room & Board and to Outdoor Volunteer Day Sponsors, the National Environmental Education Foundation and REI Corporation.
