A squirrely community
Since the article about the squirrel wars was published (“Neighbors embroiled in squirrel quarrel,” ER Jan. 7, 2010), we have received numerous calls, emails, and hand written notes from friends, family, neighbors and people from the community we didn’t even know. People have been leaving bags of peanuts at our doorstep. One rather large bag had the following note attached, “A gift from the Irena Street Squirrels to the Spencer Street Gang. Hang in there! Bon Appetit.”

Poor Haiti. It almost makes you think the country has been cursed by God, or by some voodoo spirit, or by the ghost of Papa Doc. The first modern Black nation, independent of colonial rule in 1804, Haiti was born in hope but for most of its history has been battered both by the elements of nature and by human avarice.

Bad News First: The South Bay began the year with the loss of two restos Brix, PCH, HB and Le Saint Raphael, PCH, RB. Neither were a surprise but for very different reasons. Brix’s owner had heart, soul, ideas, visions, friends, a great chef, and a sommelier but it wasn’t enough.
