Photographer Gus McConnell caught up with Hammerland’s regular crew, including Tyler Hatikian, Matt Pagan and Tom Seth, plus young new challengers Noah Collins and “Chewy” Chernega when El Nino delivered it’s first swell to the South Bay on January 6.
Photographer Brad Jacobson met the first solid swell of 2016 at Torrance Beach’s Burnout, the moved north to the El Segundo. At Burnout he caught newly emerging South Bay chargers Conor Beatty and Angel Luhrsen. At Hammerland, he caught another new charger Noah Collins, as well as old guard surfers Tyler Hatzikian, Chris Wells, John Gillmore, Matt Mohagen, Matt Pagan and Damien Fahrenfort.
Photographer Mike Balzer stationed himself at the Redondo Breakwater when the first solid swell of El Nino 2016 lit up Southern California Beaches on January 6 and 7. Balzer is president of the South Bay Boardriders Association, which sponsors the South Bay Big Wave Challenge. The contest honors surfers who ride the biggest South Bay waves of the the winter.
