Beach Cities Sports: Basketball, football, triathlon and more

Basketball: Registration is open for the Hermosa Beach Youth Basketball Summer League. Open to boys and girls kindergarten through 8th grade, the league runs for four weeks starting Tuesday, July 5 and ending Monday, Aug. 1. Players register in the same grade they are currently in. Try outs to rate all players will be held on Saturday, June 4 at Valley Middle School. Cost is $150 (add $10 after June 1). Online registration available at hbyb.net. Dave Miller, current NBA basketball analyst for Time Warner Cable SportsNet, will be hosting his annual MVP  Basketball Camps at Aviation Sports Complex in Redondo Beach. Session I will be held July 11-15 and Session II  Aug. 1-5. Both run from 9 a.m – 3 p.m. The fundamental camp is for boys and girls ages 5 to 14 and geared for all levels of play. Baseball: The Redondo Highlanders and the Sea Hawk Elite Baseball Clubs have announced a merger to become one organization, joining forces in efforts to expand the leadership of quality baseball in Redondo Beach while combining their collective baseball philosophies. The merger will help ensure all youth players have an opportunity to develop their skills to the highest level through a well-defined age-based systematic approach while focusing on teamwork, communication, discipline and a strong work ethic. Beach City Baseball Academy (BCBA) is accepting applications for its “Trosky Sixth Tool” $5,000 scholarship. Deadline is May 31. Applicants must reside within 10 miles of Beach City Baseball Academy’s facility in El Segundo and be a graduating 2016 high school senior. Final award is contingent upon applicant’s acceptance and attendance at an accredited college in the United States (university, four-year, or junior college), receipt of an offer to participate in that institution’s baseball program and letter of recommendation from their high school baseball coach. Football: Redondo Beach Youth Football and Cheer will be holding registration at Perry Park, 2301 Grant Ave. from 9 a.m. – noon on Saturday, June 11. A doctor will be available on June 11 to complete player physicals. The fee for player physicals is $25. Registration fee for flag football is $250, football and cheerleading is $350. Volleyball: Voting is ongoing for the Mira Costa Women’s Beach Volleyball Hall of Fame through June 1. The Hall of Fame’s first member is Nina Matthies,  a volleyball legend and current head sand volleyball coach at Pepperdine University. This year’s ballot includes Holly McPeak, Barbra Fontana and Lisa Arce Zimmerman. Voting and full bios of each candidate can be found at miracostabeach.com.

 

Running: Registration is open for the 23rd annual Village Runner 4th of July 5K and Firecracker Dash for Kids. Presented by UCLA Health, the event costs $35 for the 5K; $25 for kid’s race. Add $5 after June 5. Kayla Montgomery, a distance runner for Nashville’s Lipscomb University who battles multiple sclerosis, will be presented this year’s Pathfinder Award. The 4th annual Sean Brock Foundation 5K & 10K Beach Run with CalCPA will take place Saturday, June 25 at 9 a.m. at Dockweiler State Beach. Captain Sean Brock, United States Marine Corps, was killed in Iraq in 2005 by enemy fire. To honor his twin brother’s legacy, Rayme Brock and a few close friends formed a non-profit foundation that provides educational assistance to family members of service members who lost their lives or were wounded in combat in order for them to pursue their educational endeavors. Triathlon: Registration is open for the 12th annual Redondo Beach Triathlon, which will begin at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, June 12 at the Veteran’s Park/Pier area in Redondo Beach. All of the proceeds go to Cheer for Children, a non-profit organization that gives seasonal parties and raises money for acutely ill children at Harbor UCLA Medical Center. The USAT sanctioned scenic course event consists of a 1/2-mile swim, 6-mile bike, and 2-mile run. Space is limited to the first 600 entries. A non-competitive mini-sprint (half the distances) is also available. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each division and the top two relay teams. Sprint fees are $75 (ages 13-19 and 65 and older), $90 (ages 20-64), $125 (relay). Mini-sprint fees are $70 and $95 for the relay. Add $5 after May 31. Beach Volleyball: The California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) will be holding tournaments on Saturday and Sunday, May 28-29 in Hermosa Beach. The weekend features two-day Men’s and Women’s Open tournament with a prize pool of $1,500 each. Saturday also includes Men’s Unrated competition. Sunday’s action include Men’s B, Women’s A and Coed AAA, A  divisions. Cost is $60 per team.($75 for Open). For more information, visit cbva.com.

 

Golf: El Camino College will hosts its 29th Annual Warrior Athletics Golf Classic on Thursday, June 9 at the Los Verdes Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes. The tournament is a four-person scramble format. Entry fee is $150 per player and includes green fees, cart, tee package, contests, lunch, dinner and five raffle tickets.
