Retiring City Manager Joe Hoefgen received a Key to the City from Mayor Bill Brand Oct. 19.
The presentation was done over Zoom, during a city council meeting, with the key fading in and out as the mayor held it up to the screen.
“Your impact’s not fading in and out,” said Brand.
Kansas native Hoefgen has served as city manager since 2015.
“I’ve lived and worked in some beautiful communities, but I am so happy to have found Redondo Beach,” he said. “And that Redondo Beach found me.”
Hoefgen previously worked for three years as the city’s community services director. He also spent four years as city manager of Palos Verdes Estates and served as assistant city manager in Del Mar from 1992-2007.
Hoefgen noted that in 35 years of city work, his wife has never attended a city meeting.
“I’ve done an excellent job keeping her away from these types of meetings,” he said.
At the end of the presentation last week, Redondo city employees gave Hoefgen virtual applause, including a standing ovation from Public Works Director Ted Semaan. ER
