Rugby: Mira Costa High School varsity rugby coaches and scholar athletes will be running a Rugby Day Camp for boys and girls ages 5-14 from 8:30 a.m. –  12 noon on Wednesday, Nov. 11 at Waller Stadium. Cost is $30 and includes lunch. Elite ruggers ages 11-13 will receive an introduction to the high school experience presented by Mustang Head Coach Duke Dulgarian. Tennis: The 1st Annual “Costa SMASH” Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament Fundraiser will take place Saturday, Nov. 14 at Mira Costa High School Tennis Courts. The $50 Entrance Donation supports The Mira Costa Girls & Boys Tennis Team Boosters and includes a tournament T-shirt and lunch. Football: South Bay native and longtime El Camino College football head coach John Featherstone recently announced plans to retire at the end of the 2015 season. All community members, alumni, and former student-athletes are invited to celebrate with the renowned coach when Featherstone will be recognized at halftime of  the last regular season game against Long Beach City College, scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14 at Redondo Union High School’s Sea Hawk Bowl.

Now in his 31st season at ECC, Featherstone entered the season with a record of 211-112-1 – the highest winning percentage of any active coach in the Southern Section of California, which includes 37 community colleges from Bakersfield to San Diego.

Featherstone was a gridiron star for Mira Costa High School, El Camino College and San Diego State University before entering the coaching ranks.

 

Beach Volleyball: Tickets are now on sale for the 5th annual California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) Hall of Fame induction ceremony to be held in conjunction with the Hermosa Beach Historical Society at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20 at the Hermosa Beach Theatre, 710 Pier Ave. Joining beach volleyball legend Lisa Arce Zimmerman (a former Mira Costa standout who later became the Mustang’s head coach) in the Class of 2015 will be Ricci Luyties, Nancy Cohen Fredgant and Jon Hastings.  Andy Fishburn, HOF Class of 2003, will also be recognized along with the CBVA’s top ranked players from each rating class and the CBVA Cal Cup Youth State Champions. Baseball: Mira Costa coaches and varsity players will be running the Mustang Thanksgiving Baseball Camp for all boys and girls ages 5-13.  The camp will be held Monday through Wednesday, Nov. 23-25 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. All campers receive a t-shirt and a daily snack. Elite campers ages 11-13 will be separated and get an introduction to a high school baseball practice. Registration is available for the Sea Hawk Elite Winter Baseball Camp to be held from 9 a.m. – 1 pm. Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 16-17, 2016 at Alta Vista Park. Open to players grade 1-8, the camp teaches fundamental skill developments focused on preparing players for the next level. The camp is run by Redondo Union High School head coach Jeff Baumback and his coaching staff along with former professional player and current scout with the Texas Rangers, Todd Guggiana. Volleyball: Registration is open for the Mira Costa Boys Holiday Camp to be held Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 21-22 from 9 a.m. – noon at the Manhattan Beach Middle School,gym, 1501 N. Redondo Ave., Manhattan Beach. Open to boys ages 9-14, the camp is for beginner, intermediate and advanced players wishing to learn more about the game, skill development and basic rules. Running: Registration is ongoing for the Manhattan Beach Yuletide 5K to be held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12. The low tide offers a hard-packed sand course that starts and finishes at the Manhattan Beach Pier. Glow necklaces and Beachy T-shirts guaranteed to all pre-registered runners and to late registrants while supplies last. Little Elves Dash for kids follows the 5K race. Registration is open for the 13th Annual Village Runner St. Patrick’s Day 5K Run and Community Walk to be held at 8 a.m. Sunday, Mar. 13 in Redondo Beach’s Riviera Village. Following the 5K at 9:30 a.m., the next generation of runners will compete in the kid’s Chase Stecyk Leprechaun Dash for Gold. All participants receive a T-shirt and cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers. The event begins with a two-day Health and Fitness Expo on Saturday, Mar. 12.
