
Mira Costa looks to get back on the winning track Friday after the Mustangs lost a shootout at West Torrance 45-39.
Playing in CIF-SS Division 6, Mira Costa (2-2) will host the division’s top-ranked team South Hills Friday at 7 p.m. In the final non-league contest before league play begins, the Huskies come to Manhattan Beach with a spotless 4-0 record.
South Hills is led by quarterback Khalil Ali who is averaging 172.3 yards passing per game.
Running back Juaquin Elliott is averaging 92 yards rushing per game while, on the other side of the ball, linebacker Aaron Rodriguez leads the Huskies averaging 7.3 tackles per game.
In last Friday’s game, Mira Costa had trouble handling West’s quarterback Brandon Poffenbarger who passed for 275 yards (16-of-27) and ran for 107 yards on 16 carries.
Trailing 28-16 at halftime, Mira Costa tried to come back but, after each score, West answered back.
Mustang quarterback Nick Carpino was 26-of-49 passing for 289 yards and three touchdowns. Matt Harry caught seven passes for 111 yards and Brody McKinnon had 62 yards and one touchdown on seven receptions.
West receiver Dutch Silverlake finished with nine catches for 185 yards and two touchdowns as the Warriors broke into the Division 9 top ten ranked 9th.
Redondo hosts West
Following a bye week after Redondo (1-3) picked up its first win, the Sea Hawks will host rival West (2-2).
Freshman quarterback Kaden Martin leads the Sea Hawks going 32-of-64 with four touchdowns but throwing three interceptions this season.
Senior running back CJ Deitrich leads the team in rushing with 173 yards while junior tight end Drew Wilson has a team-high three touchdowns.
Junior linebacker Lance Brugman leads Redondo’s defense with 37 tackles. Senior outside linebacker Timothy Ludwig has three sacks. Ludwig and junior Jacob Nash each have five tackles for loss.
