Four teams represented the Bay League, including champion Palos Verdes who earned the second seed, when the CIF Southern Section Division 1 boys tennis championships began Tuesday with wild-card matches.
After beating Redondo in a one-match playoff, Mira Costa (12-11) traveled to face Marmonte champion Calabasas (19-0) but lost 15-3 in the first round on Wednesday. All matches with the exception of the final are slated to start at 3 p.m.
Second round action will be held Friday, the quarterfinals on Tuesday, the semifinals Tuesday, May 24 and the finals on Wednesday, June 1 at the Claremont Club.
Redondo (12-11) earned an at-large berth but was defeated by host Loyola 13-5 in a wild-card match Tuesday.
Palos Verdes (15-0) defeated Dos Pueblos 17-1 in the first round and will play at Santa Margarita on Friday. Bay runner-up Peninsula (15-6), the seventh-seeded team, defeated visiting Campbell Hall 16-2 Wednesday and wil host No. 9 San Marino (11-4) in the second round.
In Division 2, Prep champion Chadwick (8-6) lost to a heartbreaker to seventh-seeded El Dorado 9-9 (78-74).
In Division 3, Pioneer champion South Torrance (16-1) had little trouble with No. 10 Lakewood, defeating the Lancers 15-3 in the opening round. The Spartans advance to play at No. 5 Redlands (20-1) in the second round.
El Segundo (10-10) dropped its opening-round match to Whitney 15-3.
In Division 5, Del Rey champion Bishop Montgomery (12-7) beat Chaffey 11-7 and will host second-seeded Milken Community (14-0) on Friday.
