Sports shorts: Boys water polo, girls golf

Mira Costa’s boys water polo team earned a share of the Bay League title with an 18-9 victory at Redondo on Tuesday.

Scoring seven goals in the first quarter, Mira Costa (20-6, 5-1) tied Palos Verdes for the league title with the win. Mira Costa is ranked No. 11 and Palos Verdes No. 12 in the Division 1 & 2 poll.

Hudson Carter led the Mustangs, scoring five of his seven goals in the first quarter.

Redondo narrowed the gap to two points when Ryley Pierce scored with 3:15 remaining in the opening quarter, but Mira Costa was on a mission and pulled away.

Ethan Laloi led Redondo with four goals while Pierce contributed three goals in the Sea Hawk’s regular season finale. Redondo is ranked No. 7 in Division 3.

Mira Costa will use two additional games to prepare for the playoffs. The Mustangs played Los Osos on Wednesday and will travel to face Agoura on Friday.

Playoffs begin Tuesday and brackets will be announced beginning t 10 a.m. on Saturday at CIFSS.org.

Girls Golf

The Mira Costa girls golf team (5-0) won the Bay League championship edging Peninsula 187-195. Junior Shani Waite shot a 4-under-par 32 while senior Klara Nagy and sophomore Juliae Shoda each shot a 1-over 37 at Chester Washington Golf Course.

Nagy shot an even-par 72 at Harding Golf Course to win the Bay League individual title.

Mira Costa’s Gabi Kiger was second shooting a 73, Chloe Chua (Peninsula), Kaitlyn You (West Torrance), Shani Waite (Mira Costa) and Casey Syal (Peninsula) each shot 75.
