

Continuing to show their prominence in South Bay races, David Cardona and DβAnn Arthur captured the male and female title, respectively, Saturday morning at the 37th Manhattan Beach 10K. After winning the Village Runner 4th of July 5K, both runners had impressive victories on the streets of Manhattan Beach among a field of more than 3,300 participants. Cardona, 23, a former standout runner at North Torrance High School, El Camino College and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, was first to cross the finish line at the Manhattan Beach Pier, completing the course in 32 minutes, 59 seconds in his first appearance in the race. Jose Lezamacortazar, 24, of Gardena finished second with a time of 33:36, beating Alexander Gorney, 26, of Torrance who placed third at 34:05. βI was a tired and little dehydrated at the end,β Cardona said. βJose and I took it out early. We were at Sand Dune Park when I decided I needed to make a move so I went hard and fast. The lead allowed me to cruise the last mile or so.β Arthur, 27, of Redondo Beach posted a time of 34:10 to beat reigning womenβs champion Nathalie Higley and finish fifth overall. Despite running 34 seconds faster than last yearβs winning time, Higley, 44, of Redondo Beach finished second at 37:01. Rachel Baker, 24, Redondo Beach placed third at 37:17.
