Designer Marina Rahlin gets colorful for the holidays

Soft bursts of red, lavender, and pink emerge from every vantage point, clashing with the unexpected geometric rigidity of sharp angles against a rich backdrop. These vibrant visuals are a far cry from a traditional White Christmas, but perhaps the Popavina collection of cocktail dresses by local designer Marina Rahlin better represents the holidays, California style. With snowfall being something of a distant rumor for beach residents, Rahlin encourages women to embrace their colorful, retro side when selecting that perfect dress for a holiday party, and don’t be afraid to let the clothes do all the talking.

“I love color, and I try not to use too much black and gray in my designs,” said Rahlin. “I love how color can make you stand out. I want people to see these dresses and think ‘wow, red and purple!’”

While she encourages fashionistas to embrace a bold color palette, Rahlin also touts the cut of the dresses as key part of the seasonal appeal. With Popavina this season, you won’t find your typical little black dress.

“These dresses are very cocktail, very sophisticated,” said Rahlin. “So when you’re going out with your family or to a holiday event this year, you can still be very cute and definitely stand out without appearing too sexy or provocative.”

Rahlin, a recent FIDM graduate, claims fashion to be her long time passion in life, but also one of the most challenging pursuits she has ever encountered. “I spent two years in the Israeli military teaching English, and let me tell you, mentally, FIDM was way more challenging,” Rahlin said “But you learn so much about yourself. It was an amazing experience.”

Rahlin attributes her tendency to incorporate brilliant colors in her designs to her Russian-Israeli background.

“I probably get my love of color from my Russian parents,” said Rahlin. “I think my designs have something of a European feel to them when it comes to color and style. I like to stay away from just the basics. Your clothes should make you stand out and feel alive.”
