A 200-drone light show is planned to replace the annual King Harbor fireworks show that was canceled last week by Pyro Spectaculars, the cityโs longtime fireworks contractor.
A special city council meeting is set for Thursday, June 29, at 4:30 p.m. to approve a $65,000 expenditure for Sky Elements, of Fort Worth, Texas, which puts on drone light shows of detailed shapes and formations in the sky.
โIt is something we are working towards,โ said Kyle Pivnick, show coordinator for Sky Elements. โItโs 60/40 that it may happen on the short timeline. Iโm very happy with the responsiveness of Redondo Beach.โ
The company syncs drones to fly in unison with colored lights, creating the images.
โThis will be an experiment. But it could be the future,โ said Redondo Beach Mayor Bill Brand.
Over the past two months, Sky Elements has done 600-drone shows over the Santa Monica Pier for the release of โThe Super Mario Brothersโ and โThe Flashโ movies
The Redondo Beach show, if it goes forward, would start at 9 p.m. July 4 over King Harbor, at Seaside Lagoon.
The fireworks were canceled because of the contractorsโ concerns about new L.A. Regional Water Quality Control Board requirements for shooting fireworks over water.ER
